Microsoft deploys Xbox One Summer Update with loads of new features

Microsoft is rolling out a major Xbox One firmware update today, giving console owners access to long-requested system features like user-selected background music and voice commands via Cortana.

This week’s update also tweaks several aspects of the Xbox One dashboard, overhauling the console’s Game Collection screen and improving content-sharing functionality, among other changes.

After installing the latest Xbox One firmware update, players will be able to listen to their own music during gameplay using the console’s newly released Pandora app. Microsoft revealed that Pandora is “the first of many partners who will support Background Music,” announcing that upcoming Groove Music and iHeartRadio apps will offer similar functionality.

Rival console manufacturer Sony previously introduced streamed background music support for its PlayStation 4 console via a Spotify app released in 2015. Previously, Xbox One players needed to use the console’s Snap functionality to listen to background music loaded on a connected flash drive or other physical media source.

This week also marks the launch of Cortana on Xbox One. Initially available for Windows Phone devices and Microsoft’s Windows 10 operating system, Cortana is a digital assistant that interprets and executes voice commands via a headset or the Kinect peripheral. Microsoft notes that Xbox One owners can use Cortana to “find great new games, see what your friends are up to, start a party, accomplish common tasks, turn on your Xbox One if you’re using Kinect, and more.”

Players can also look forward to an overhauled Xbox One Game Collection screen that displays more titles on screen and offers new sorting options. Installed content is now emphasized over previous purchases and backward compatible releases, and available game updates are now clearly listed under a separate tab.

Other improved features in store for this week’s update include language region independence, automatic Activity Feed sharing, and 60 fps game recording. The Xbox One Summer Update is available as a free download starting today, and players will be prompted to update when connecting to Xbox Live.

Following up on its Sky Cipher special edition Xbox Wireless Controller, Microsoft has announced a full series of transparent controllers now available for preorder.

The Cipher Series Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 comes in six different color options. The white Ghost Cipher is the most transparent-looking, but there are also Velocity Cipher, Astral Cipher, Surf Cipher, Candy Cipher, and Pulse Cipher, which are Xbox green, purple, blue, pink, and red, respectively. You can mix and match D-pad, button, joystick, and trigger colors, and get your own in the Design Lab. A base model will cost $150, and be wary of any add-ons that might up the price more than you'd like.

As the fall season approaches, the number of high-profile Xbox Game Pass additions is rising. That said, the service also does a great job of appealing to players who are fans of more specific, niche genres. September 2024 has been particularly kind to Xbox Game Pass subscribers who are fans of simulation or strategy games that require a deeper level of engagement and dedication. These are the kinds of games I'm recommending to you this week, especially because one of them launches right into Microsoft's video game subscription service today.
Frostpunk 2

Later today, Frostpunk 2 will get its wide release on PC and be available to Game Pass subscribers. It is a more ambitious sequel to an enthralling yet stressful city-builder in which players try to survive in a harsh, snowy apocalypse. Frostpunk 2 increases the scale of things as players try to maintain the restored civilization they built from scratch in the first game. It exacerbates the already stressful nature of real-time city-builders but in a way that works perfectly in its postapocalyptic world. Frostpunk 2 is only available on PC, and you can play it there with a PC Game Pass or Game Pass Ultimate subscription.

Xbox Game Pass’ new Standard tier is missing some big games

Players are digging into Xbox Game Pass now that the company has officially launched its new Xbox Game Pass Standard tier. However, they've discovered that it's missing quite a few noteworthy titles, including some that were already on the service before Xbox switched to its new payment structure.

Xbox published a post on September 10 marking the move, and explaining its new Game Pass plans in a succinct manner. Want to just use your Xbox for multiplayer? Grab Game Pass Core. Just want games on your PC? Get PC Game Pass. Game Pass Standard, arguably the most confusing new tier of the bunch when it was announced back in July, is for people who want to "level up [their] Xbox console gaming experience at a great value." It costs $15 per month compared to Ultimate's $20 per month (up from $17).
