‘Resident Evil 7’ trailer cuts to the chase, reveals first in-game footage

Capcom released a new trailer Wednesday for its upcoming survival horror sequel Resident Evil 7, giving players an early glimpse at a chase sequence featured in the final product.

The trailer marks the first time that Capcom has shown off actual in-game footage for Resident Evil 7, as previously issued demos and preview material featured content that will not be included in the game’s forthcoming retail release.

Announced at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo, Resident Evil 7 represents a major shift for Capcom’s decade-spanning survival horror series. In contrast to the action-driven approach adopted by previous Resident Evil games, Resident Evil 7 challenges players to navigate creepy environments from a first-person perspective as they flee their mysterious pursuers.

Capcom followed up on its Resident Evil 7 reveal earlier this year with the launch of Resident Evil 7 Teaser: Beginning Hour, a demo version featuring a unique storyline not found in the upcoming retail release. Beginning Hour finds players alone in an abandoned house, which they must search for items that will aid their escape.

Today’s Resident Evil 7 trailer introduces a different gameplay segment featuring a young woman who is pursued by a threatening figure carrying a lantern. The trailer shows off a number of detailed interior environments before ending with an attempted stealth sequence. It’s likely that Resident Evil 7‘s campaign will feature similar hide-and-seek gameplay throughout, and players can further immerse themselves in the experience via recently announced PlayStation VR support.

Resident Evil 7 Teaser: Beginning Hour fueled online speculation for weeks after its initial launch, and fans have yet to fully uncover the secrets it contained. It remains to be seen whether the new trailer will lead to further discoveries within Beginning Hour.

Resident Evil 7 launches for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Windows PCs via Steam on January 24, 2017.

VR gaming lost me in 2023, and then totally won me back
A character slashes enemies in Asgard's Wrath 2.

If you'd asked me where I stood on VR gaming back in early May of this year, it would have been a dire conversation.

A little over a month into the PlayStation VR2's life span, I was feeling entirely disillusioned with the tech. Headsets liked the Meta Quest 2 had stopped delivering fresh experiences that felt like they could transcend the technical gimmick and PSVR2 felt dead in the water on day one. Despite being a firm supporter of VR for a decade, I felt like the train was about to leave the station for me.

Resident Evil 4: how to deface Ramon’s portrait
Leon looks at a portrait

Resident Evil 4 has a couple of requests worth taking on to help you trade for some sweet loot, but "The Disgrace of the Salazar Family" is perhaps the most satisfying. The note to start this quirky sidequest can be found hanging right by the gondola at the beginning of Chapter 12, and it asks you to deface the portrait of Ramon Salazar in the throne room of the castle. It's an odd request for a survival horror game, but if we're being frank, the little jerk has it coming. We'll tell you where to find his portrait and how to deface it.
How to find and deface Ramon's portrait
Ramon's portrait is found in the throne room of the castle, which means you'll need to do a bit of backtracking through some areas you've previously visited. You'll also run into a handful of challenging foes as you pass through the areas leading back to the throne room, so be prepared to put up a fight.

When you finally reach the throne room, you'll find Ramon's portrait hanging on the left wall of the room – a much smaller portrait compared to the others found on the back wall. Your first instinct may be to start slashing away at it with your knife or shooting bullets into his smug face, but the way to complete this request is actually a little more fun and juvenile than that.

The best video games of March 2023: Resident Evil 4, Tchia, and more
Leon and Ashley in the Resident Evil 4 remake.

It's not October, but we just had a very good month for horror games. From the indie scene to AAA and from VR to a traditional gaming experience, fans of scary games had a lot to enjoy in March 2023. Of course, there was the highly anticipated remake of Resident Evil 4, one of the best horror games of all time, and it didn't disappoint. Keeping up the scares were experimental horror games like Paranormasight: The Seven Mysteries of Honjo and Dredge, while The Dark Pictures: Switchback VR affirmed why virtual reality is a good fit for horror. Even Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty will also be a scary experience for some because of its difficulty.
We also recommend trying the environmentally conscious reverse city-builder Terra Nil, exploring islands inspired by New Caledonia in Tchia, or taking in the beautiful art of Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon. While horror fans were treated particularly well this month, it was a good one for gaming all the way around. As such, we recommend checking one of the following eight games if you're looking for something new to play.
Resident Evil 4 remake

Capcom's comprehensive remake of Resident Evil 4 is by far the most notable release of March 2022. Remaking a game that is so beloved and highly influential was a major risk, but Capcom was able to pull it off. It not only lovingly recreates iconic moments from the original, but actively improves the experience by enhancing the gameplay with features like a knife parry and recontextualizing some of its classic plot beats and set pieces.
"It’s a truly transformative remake that isn’t afraid to throw out what didn’t work and put its own creative spin on everything from story to level design to its wildly improved combat," Digital Trends' Giovanni Colantonio wrote in a four-and-a-half star review of Resident Evil 4's remake. "That makes for a refreshingly confident project that excels both as a look back to the past and a bold step forward for the series’ future."
The remake of Resident Evil 4 is available now for PC, PlayStation 4, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
