Mercedes-Benz’s electric EQC is one of the most affordable cars in its segment

Mercedes-Benz launched its electric car offensive when it unveiled a crossover named EQC in 2018. Designed exclusively with battery power in mind, it’s one of the most high-tech cars the innovative German firm has ever released, and it will join Tesla’s growing list of nightmares when it goes on sale in early 2020.

The EQC inaugurates the EQ sub-brand, a name that stands for “electric intelligence.” It’s close to the existing, gasoline-powered GLC in terms of size, style, and proportions, but it receives an electric-specific front-end design that draws inspiration from the Generation EQ concept car we saw at the 2016 Paris auto show. The top slat in the grille lights up to connect the LED inserts in the headlights, a styling cue that gives the model a futuristic look. From the side, Mercedes designers retained the basic proportions of a gasoline-powered crossover to preserve a degree of familiarity. Moving around to the back, a thin light bar connects the taillights to create a surprisingly Porsche-like look. Blue accents all around hint at the electric power under the sheet metal.

Two high-resolution screens under a single glass pane dominate the dashboard. The left screen replaces the instrument cluster and the right one runs the latest generation of Mercedes’ MBUX infotainment system optimized for electric vehicles. Mercedes notes the navigation system takes charging times into account, for example, and lets the driver find the nearest charging station. It also provides information like opening times and available slots if it’s connected to the internet.

At launch, Mercedes will offer a single variant of the model, named EQC 400. It’s powered by an electric motor mounted over each axle, a configuration quickly becoming par for the course in this burgeoning segment. They draw electricity from an 80-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack to provide 402 horsepower — hence the 400 part of the nameplate — and 564 pound-feet of torque. Mercedes hasn’t released the EQC’s weight yet but promises it takes merely 4.9 seconds to perform the benchmark 0-to-60-mph sprint. That’s on par with Porsche’s agile 718 Cayman.

The EQC will join Tesla’s growing list of nightmares when it goes on sale across America in 2020.

The EQC falls a little short when it comes to range. Fully charged, its battery pack provides up to 200 miles of range, a figure that pushes it behind rivals like the Jaguar I-Pace, which offers up to 240 miles. Two hundred miles places the EQC behind cars positioned a notch or two below it, like the Chevrolet Bolt (238 miles). Mercedes notes a 110-kilowatt fast charger juices up the battery pack from 10% to 80% in 40 minutes. It hasn’t released other charging data.

Made in Germany, the Mercedes-Benz EQC will go on sale in early 2020 with a base price of $67,900 excluding a $995 destination charge and any available incentives, like the one-time $7,500 tax credit some buyers can claim from the federal government. There will be three trim levels to choose from: Progressive, Premium, and Advanced. This positioning puts the EQC right under its main rivals; Audi charges $74,800 for the E-Tron, and the Jaguar I-Pace starts at $69,500. Tesla charges about $85,000 for the Model X, which offers more driving range.

What’s next?

Officials stress the EQC is just the beginning of Mercedes’ electric car offensive. The company plans on expanding the lineup with at least three additional models named EQA, EQE, and EQS. The last letter denotes which rung of the Mercedes hierarchy they’ll sit on. The A will be A-Class-sized, the E will be E-Class-sized, and so on. We expect most of them will be crossovers rather than sedans or hatchbacks.

Mercedes-Benz is one of the oldest automakers in existence, but it's been among the quickest to launch a lineup of electric cars. It may not have the freshness of a startup, but what it does have are actual cars to sell to customers.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV is the middle child of Mercedes' electric SUV lineup, slotting between the entry-level EQB and the flagship EQS SUV, and targeting electric luxury SUVs like the Audi E-Tron, BMW iX, and Cadillac Lyriq. Like the EQS, the EQE SUV is based on an existing sedan, hence the "SUV" suffix. In a previous first drive, we found the EQE sedan to be a good balance between luxury and livability, giving the SUV version a lot to live up to.

As Mercedes-Benz has steadily expanded its EQ range of electric cars, the lineup has become a bit like the late stages of a Tetris game. It’s mostly complete, but with a few gaps still left. And the 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV is the piece that perfectly fits one of them.
Mercedes recently launched two other electric SUVs at opposite ends of the price spectrum. The EQS SUV is positioned as the lineup’s flagship, while the EQB is the entry-level model. The EQE SUV slots between those two in size and, presumably, price. The latter hasn’t been confirmed yet, and likely won’t be until the EQE SUV’s planned March 2023 on-sale date.

Design
As the name says, the EQE SUV is a utility-vehicle version of the EQE sedan, which will likely beat it to showrooms by a few months. Mercedes did the same thing with the EQS, which is available in both SUV and sedan body styles.
With its tall, upright profile, the EQE SUV definitely looks like a proper SUV compared to the low-slung EQE sedan. Park it next to an EQS SUV, though, and you’ll have to get out a measuring tape to spot the differences.
The EQE SUV is 0.6 inch narrower and 1.2 inches lower than the EQS SUV, but the most significant difference is in length. The EQE SUV is 10.3 inches shorter than the EQS SUV, with a 2.1-inch shorter wheelbase. And while the EQS SUV has three-row seating, the EQE SUV has two rows. Based on our experience with the EQS SUV’s third row, that’s not a big loss.
The interior design theme carries over from other Mercedes EQ models, with an expansive sloping dashboard designed to accommodate many screens, and multicolor ambient lighting that should look pretty dramatic at night. However, leatherette upholstery is standard, rather than real leather, which Mercedes is now spinning as a vegan option.

Mercedes-Benz is continuing to expand its EV lineup, this time with a model aimed at (wealthy) families.
As the name states, the 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV is an SUV derivative of the EQS sedan. With the EQS sedan positioned as the electric analog to the Mercedes S-Class, the EQS SUV is the electric version of the GLS-Class. And like that vehicle, the EQS SUV is available with up to seven seats across three rows.
That makes the EQS SUV an important vehicle not just for Mercedes, but for the cause of EV adoption in general. While the Tesla Model X and Rivian R1S also offer three rows for family-hauling duty, there’s a lot more room in the market for another entry. Given the popularity of equivalent gasoline luxury SUVs like the GLS, Land Rover Range Rover, and Cadillac Escalade, the EQS SUV arrives not a moment too soon.
The EQS SUV is scheduled to reach U.S. dealerships this fall in three guises. The base rear-wheel-drive EQS 450+ starts at $105,550 with destination, while the all-wheel drive EQS 450 4Matic and EQS 580 4Matic start at $108,550 and $127,100, respectively. Although it will be built in Alabama, the EQS SUV won’t qualify for the revised federal EV tax credit because it exceeds the $80,000 price cap for SUVs.

Design and interior
A defining feature of Mercedes’ EQ lineup is aerodynamic bodywork aimed at maximizing range. The typical SUV is not aerodynamically ideal, but Mercedes managed to achieve an impressively low drag coefficient for an SUV — at 0.26, it’s close to the Toyota Prius. But function clearly took precedence over form. Mercedes deserves credit for not going in the polarizing direction BMW did with its two-row iX SUV, but the EQS SUV looks like a melting scoop of ice cream.
More disappointing is the third row, which should be the EQS SUV’s defining feature, but seems more like a useless afterthought. Adults will find it difficult to insert themselves into the third-row seats, let alone tolerate riding in them. As in most three-row vehicles, the rear seats also pretty much eliminate cargo space. And if you want to fold them down to create more cargo room, you’ll have to do it manually as Mercedes didn’t include a power-folding system — a bit disappointing for a six-figure car. The EQS SUV also lacks a frunk; like the EQS sedan, the hood is sealed.
