A special Animal Crossing: New Horizon Nintendo Switch is on the way

Nintendo unveiled a new Animal Crossing: New Horizon‘s-themed console this week that is slated to ship on March 13 for $300, with orders now open for those interested in buying. The limited-edition Nintendo Switch is curently available for pre-order at GameStop, Target, and Walmart

In accordance with the vacation-themed setting in New Horizons, this new Nintendo Switch’s aesthetic provides brings tropical colors and designs, and it’s one of the more unique Switch models available. Other limited edition Switch models were made for Super Mario Odyssey and Pokémon Let’s Go: Pikachu and Eevee, and a Switch Lite for Pokemon Sword and Shield came out last year. The serial number provided on one of the images confirms that the new model will include improved battery life for users playing on the go.

This new Switch variant’s Joy-Cons sporting a mint green and blue color scheme. In contrast, the main body features various Animal Crossing symbols representing characters, furniture, and other details. The console’s dock sports a distinct design of Tom Nook on a deserted island accompanied by his nephews, Timmy and Tommy.

In addition to a new limited edition console, Nintendo announced the Animal Crossing: New Horizons “Aloha Edition.” This package comes with a Nintendo Switch carrying case and a screen protector, so you can bring your Switch with you without having to worry about cracking its expensive screen. Although the “Aloha Edition” was confirmed to launch on the same day as the newly-announced Switch, with the product retailing for $25. With pre-orders available on Best Buy, Target, and Walmart.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is the fifth main entry in the franchise and is slated to launch on March 20 exclusively for the Nintendo Switch. In New Horizons, players control a customizable avatar who has relocated to a deserted island after purchasing a robust vacation package from the businessman Tom Nook. Based on details Nintendo has so far released, aside from paying off their debts to relocate to a new home, players will build this island the way they envision.

Several new features, such as the ability to craft new tools and furniture, previously appeared in the free-to-play mobile game,  Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, along with the option to change your character’s skin color, a feature that debuted in Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer.

I still have a clear memory of Christmas Day 2001. After a morning of eagerly unwrapping my gifts, my parents rolled out one more surprise that I'd been so desperately anticipating. It wasn't just a fancy new electronic device; it was a toy.

That used to be the dual function of a video game console. Each one was unpredictable, bringing entirely new innovations or gimmicks that begged to be played with as much as the games. The ones that didn't at least got playful with their design. That's slowed with each passing generation. Vibrant colors has been replaced with black and white plastic. Xbox console designs now border on brutalist. Everything is slowly converging to one unified vision of what a video game console looks like.

Nintendo Switch 2 – First-look trailer

Yesterday, Nintendo revealed its next console, the Nintendo Switch 2, via a short video. The clip didn't reveal too much outside of its design and a brief glimpse of the next Mario Kart game. We did get one crucial detail, though: the system is compatible with Nintendo Switch games, both digitally and physically. There is one caveat that has fans nervous, though. Nintendo says that select games won't be backwards compatible, but it hasn't explained what that means yet.

Industry analysts have great expectations for the next Nintendo console, predicting it will sell as many as 15 million units its first year. The Nintendo Switch 2 saw its first official teaser today, although a full Nintendo Direct won't happen until April. The company hopes to outsell the original Switch, but given that it has sold 147 million units since 2017 — with a large boost of sales during the lockdown — that's going to be tough to do.

But it's possible, especially with an existing base of at least 105 million users, according to analyst George Jijiashvili. He says the most important factor in the success of the Switch 2 is the transition period. "However, the biggest challenge will be managing the transition effectively — convincing users to upgrade to the Switch 2 while ensuring those sticking with the original Switch remain supported and engaged," he told us.
