Don’t worry, the OnePlus 9 will come with a fast charger in the box

OnePlus is gearing up to release the OnePlus 9, and the company is also prepping to buck a somewhat detrimental smartphone trend — the absence of a charging brick with new phones — in the process. Writing in response to a query by a potential customer, CEO Pete Lau confirmed the upcoming phone would ship with both a charging cable and charging brick in the box.

It may seem like an unremarkable thing to note, but much like the headphone jack, it is no longer a guarantee your new smartphone will come with an accessory that was once taken for granted. In a trend popularized by Apple and the iPhone 12, some other phone manufacturers have opted to start shipping their phones in smaller boxes without charging bricks because most users already have chargers lying around and can easily do without them. It’s also being eschewed for environmental reasons aimed at reducing the e-waste from excess chargers.

The difference such actions make to e-waste is still up for debate. Ruediger Kuehr, head of the Sustainable Cycles (SCYCLE) Programme hosted by the United Nations University said when speaking to Wired last year: “The percentage of chargers coming from tablets, smartphones, et cetera is 0.1 percent of the total e-waste increase.”

OnePlus phones use the company’s proprietary Warp Charge technology. The Warp Charge 30T charger included with the OnePlus 8 Pro charges the battery to full in less than an hour, and even its wireless charging is fast, with a 50% charge taking just 30 minutes. To achieve these speeds, you must use a Warp Charge charging brick and OnePlus’s USB Type-C cable, otherwise it will just charge at a normal, slow speed. If OnePlus takes the time to develop fast charging, and then uses Warp Charge as a selling point, it’s unlikely to force you to pay extra for a charging brick to make it work.

The OnePlus 9 series will launch on March 23, and in addition to talk about the battery and charging, we’re excited to see how a rumored partnership with camera experts Hasselblad works out. We’ll have comprehensive OnePlus 9 coverage on the release day.

OnePlus is killing it, but it still needs to fix this problem with its phones
The OnePlus 13's camera.

If you're looking to buy one of the best phones right now, you need to consider the latest flagship from OnePlus. Dubbed the OnePlus 13, it launched three weeks ago and after spending more than a month with it, it's become clear that it's my favorite Android smartphone.

Yet, there's a clear problem with the OnePlus 13 and it's a long-standing problem that OnePlus has never really tried to resolve. Well, that's not entirely true but internal strife between former co-founders and the complex issue of its relationship with sibling Oppo have made it a challenge for OnePlus to solve this.

Hey Samsung — I wish you had copied this OnePlus 13 feature
The Galaxy S25 Plus in Navy vs the OnePlus 13 in Blue

Samsung’s latest smartphones are finally here and with a few tweaks to the build size and weight — plus the addition of a new ultrawide camera in the Galaxy S25 Ultra — they represent some of the most polished smartphones that Samsung has ever made.

Yet, they also follow the same mold of Samsung’s previous smartphones and have launched amid a backdrop of intense competition in the U.S. and abroad. The latest competitor for the Galaxy S25 series in the US was launched by OnePlus just a few weeks ago, and having used the OnePlus 13 series for several weeks, there’s one key feature that I wish Samsung had copied.

The OnePlus 13 has already set an impossible standard for Android phones in 2025
A person taking the OnePlus 13 out of a pocket.

Four weeks into the first month of the year, one thing is clear about smartphones in 2025: this is going to be an extremely competitive year. Whereas some phone makers used to wait until February or March to launch their flagships for the first half of the year, the early launch of the Snapdragon 8 Elite last year has seen all companies launch their products early.

Honor launched the Magic 7 Pro two weeks ago, followed by Samsung with the Galaxy S25 series last week. Before both of these, however, was the launch of the OnePlus 13, a phone that I think is setting the standard for smartphones in 2025 in so many ways.
