What is Best Buy Beta? Everything you need to know

Best Buy Beta, the tech retailer’s new premium membership, is rolling out right now in select markets across the U.S. This new subscription service is shaping up to be a must-have for business owners, techies, and frequent Best Buy shoppers in general, covering virtually all of your tech needs from free installation and extended warranties to customized purchase advice and exclusive members-only discounts. It’s only available in a few states right now but will be expanding to other markets very soon, so if you’re curious about Best Buy Beta, then here’s everything you need to know.

What is Best Buy Beta?

Best Buy

Everybody is familiar with Best Buy as a go-to place for things like laptop deals, discounted 4K TVs, and other big-ticket electronics, and even in an age of online retail when many people prefer to do the bulk of their shopping online, this big-box brick-and-mortar store hasn’t slowed down a bit. That’s largely due to the fact that Best Buy offers excellent post-purchase support (such as on-site installation) and in-person repair services through Geek Squad, advantages that you normally don’t get with online-only outlets.

Best Buy Beta is a premium service that expands these advantages even further. Best Buy Beta members can enjoy on-demand priority service from the Concierge team (including expert advice about purchases), 24-month protection guarantees on new tech, and unlimited Geek Squad support in-store, online, or over the phone 24/7 regardless of whether or not you purchased your item from Best Buy. If you frequently pay for extended warranties for your new tech, then the free 24-month Best Buy Protection and AppleCare plans alone can save you a lot.

But you can rack up more savings as well: Your Best Buy Beta membership earns you a tidy 20% discount on labor for all repairs (on items not covered by that 24-month Best Buy Protection guarantee, that is) along with free standard shipping with no purchase minimums and free on-site installation on most items. If you’ve ever had to pay a professional to set up your new stuff — such as a big-screen TV or surround sound system, to name two common examples — then you already know that this sort of service never comes cheap, so that’s another huge savings potential for Best Buy Beta members.

Finally, Best Buy Beta subscribers can enjoy members-only discounts on select items, an extended 60-day return window for all purchases (with no restocking fees), and exclusive discounts on many subscriptions billed through Best Buy including Microsoft Office 365, Pandora, Tidal, Philo TV, and more.

How to sign up for Best Buy Beta

Best Buy Beta is undergoing a limited test launch and is currently available only to residents of Iowa, Oklahoma, and Pennsylvania, with plans to expand to Minnesota, North Carolina, and Tennessee in April. After this pilot, Best Buy Beta is expected to eventually roll out nationwide, with memberships ringing in at $200 per year or $180 per year for Best Buy credit cardholders. WhatsApp Buisness is beta testing a new shortcut for quick replies

WhatsApp has released several new updates to enhance the platform’s engagement rate. Now, the company has enabled a new shortcut for quick replies on the beta versions of both Android and iOS , though some users who have installed the latest update may still not see this option. This is because the option has been rolled out only to select beta testers, and others may need to wait for further updates to see this option enabled.
"Quick replies" was one of the earliest features introduced to the WhatsApp Business platform. It allows for reusing frequent messages via keyboard shortcuts, a little similar to how the G-board memory works when typing out similar messages or emails. To use quick replies, a user needs to type out "/" as suggested by "WABetaInfo", and then select the message to send from the list.

The reasons for adding this shortcut are currently unknown, but the real benefits will be experienced once the update is available to a wider audience. At the moment, the new shortcut option has been added to the chat share action menu that can be seen by both Android and iOS device users.
What's next?
Meanwhile, WhatsApp has plans for several updates for 2022, including an option for hiding the "last seen" view for specific contacts. The social media giant's basic messenger and business versions are currently at the number 2 and number 5 positions, respectively, in the "free communication apps" section in the Google Play Store, compared to Telegram, which is at number 3. However, the combination of 5.5 billion downloads from WhatsApp apps on Android makes it the clear market leader.

Why Best Buy just pulled TCL’s Google TVs from stores
TCL's 6-Series Google TV with mini-LED backlighting.

TCL's 5-Series and 6-Series Google TVs are no longer available at Best Buy. The retailer has pulled these models from its stores and website. Clicking links that previously worked for the product pages in question now result in a "We’re sorry, something went wrong" message. The reason for the removal of these TVs is ongoing software problems that have led to degraded performance, according to 9to5Google.

Digital Trends reached out to TCL for its comments on the situation. "We do not comment on the actions of our retail partners," a TCL spokesperson responded. "However, we can confirm that TCL Televisions featuring the Google TV OS remain available for sale around the world." This seems to be true -- Best Buy Canada still lists the 5-Series on its site
. We also reached out to Best Buy for its comments, but we have yet to receive a response.
"TCL is committed to delivering premium products with world-class experiences and the new product featuring Google TV is certainly no different. We are sorry to hear that some users are facing challenges with the stability of the user interface featured on TCL sets with Google TV. Our high-performance TVs are constantly evolving and recent software updates have allowed us to make significant progress, but we will continue to refine our products featuring Google TV. Patience is appreciated, as customers will see marked improvements in the weeks to come." -- TCL
The removal of TCL TVs does not affect the company's other smart TVs, like its line of Roku TVs or its Android TV-based models.

Qualcomm wants you to know it powers the world’s best camera phones
Qualcomm logo at an event.

A typical discussion of the best smartphone cameras typically centers around things like image sensors, lenses, and to a large extent, the manufacturer’s camera algorithm. Chipmaker Qualcomm, however, seems a tad miffed about all this. At the company’s 2021 Investors Day conference, Qualcomm made a feeble attempt at letting the world know that it deserves some credit for the imaging capabilities possessed by some of the world’s best camera phones.

Qualcomm attempted to make a case for itself by highlighting the fact that most of the past recipients of DXOMark’s best smartphone camera award happened to be powered by Qualcomm processors. They also used Qualcomm’s powerful line of Spectra Image Signal Processors (ISP), thereby making them worthy of some credit. Take the case of the Snapdragon 888-powered Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra -- the 2021 winner. While most people give credit to the phone’s impressive camera hardware for its imaging prowess, Qualcomm wants us to also appreciate the fact that most of this hardware was powered by Qualcomm’s Spectra 580 ISP.
