Samsung’s Galaxy A22 5G is one of the cheapest 5G phones we’ve seen yet

Just when you thought 5G phones couldn’t get much cheaper, Samsung announces the Galaxy A22 5G, which will be available in the U.K. in the near future for 209 British pounds, or about $295 at the current conversion rate. To put its price into context, the Samsung Galaxy A32 5G costs 250 pounds/$352, while in the U.S., the Galaxy A32 5G is $280.

What do you get? The Galaxy A22 5G has a 6.6-inch TFT screen with a 90Hz refresh rate and a Full HD+ resolution, plus a triple camera on the back with a 48-megapixel main camera, a 5MP ultra-wide, and a 2MP depth camera. The selfie camera has 8MP and is set inside a V-shaped notch at the top of the screen. This is a cheap phone so it’s no surprise to find the A22 5G is made of plastic, but so is the Galaxy A52 5G, and that feels great in the hand.

There’s a fingerprint sensor set inside the power button on the side of the phone, and a 5,000mAh battery inside with 15W charging. There is only one version of the phone available, and that comes with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage space. Like many of the other low-cost 5G phones announced recently, the Galaxy A22 5G is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 700 processor, which based on my time with the Realme 8 5G, provides great performance.

The Galaxy A22 5G has Android 11 with Samsung’s OneUI 3.1 user interface and comes in a choice of three colors — grey, white, or violet. It’s a chunky thing though, with a total weight of 202 grams and 9mm thickness. Samsung says the Galaxy A22 5G will be available in the U.K. in early summer but does not mention a U.S. release. We’ve contacted Samsung to confirm any launch plans for the U.S. and will update when we hear back.

Reasonably priced smartphones with 5G are becoming commonplace, with multiple companies launching models that cost less than the equivalent of $300 over the last months, including Xiaomi, Realme, and Poco. It’s a trend we expect to continue throughout the year, driven by chips like the MediaTek Dimensity 700 and the Qualcomm Snapdragon 480.

I still don’t have 5G at home, and the reasons why amazed me
4G reception bars on an iPhone 16 Pro Max.

As I write these words, seated in my home office, my phone has one single bar of 4G reception. If I go to a different room, I may see two bars.

I have repeatedly wondered why I do not have 5G reception at home. Considering it's nearing the end of 2024, it's a not unreasonable request given 5G launched here in the U.K. in mid-2019. I decided to find out what was going on. What I discovered was a mix of expected, and highly unexpected, reasons why 5G continues to not be available near me.

Software updates for cheap Samsung phones may soon get a lot better
The Samsung Galaxy A35 and Galaxy A55's screens.

The Samsung Galaxy A16 5G is expected to launch in India at the end of September. TheTechOutlook first reported the leak, sharing an interesting tidbit of information: The A16 5G will get six years of guaranteed software updates.

Samsung started offering seven years of updates with the launch of the Galaxy S24 (a much more expensive device) earlier this year, a stark upgrade from the four years of updates offered with the S23.

Have one of these Samsung devices? You won’t get software updates anymore
Four galaxy z flip3 5g phones.

When you buy a phone, you expect it to work for at least a couple of years, if not longer. For many people, the time to upgrade to a new device is when it no longer receives security updates. Samsung has announced the Galaxy Z Flip 5G, Galaxy Tab S7, and Galaxy Tab S7 Plus will receive no more software updates. All three devices are now four years old, having launched in August 2020. That's about the average timespan for supporting mobile devices, but it still feels a little too short.

If you own one of these three gadgets, you might want to think about getting a newer version. While the Z Flip 5G, Tab S7, and Tab S7 Plus will all continue to work (at least for a while), they will be less secure. Software updates aren't just for improving performance and adding new features but also for patching vulnerabilities that could put your data at risk. If nothing else, make sure to use a VPN when handling any personal or banking information.
