AMC original shows will temporarily come to Max in September

Among the major streaming services, AMC+ has a library of top-tier shows, but not as many subscribers as its rivals. However, some of AMC’s series will soon get a much larger showcase. Warner Bros. Discovery and AMC announced a deal that will temporarily bring several AMC originals to Max under the banner AMC+ Picks starting September 1. AMC+ Picks on Max will be ad-free, and it will be available on all tiers of Max at no additional charge.

Certain shows, like Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, and The Walking Dead, will not be included in this deal because the streaming rights to those series are locked up with Netflix. However, many other series from AMC and BBC America are included, including Killing Eve seasons 1-4, Fear the Walking Dead seasons 1-7, Interview with the Vampire season 1, Dark Winds season 1, and A Discovery of Witches seasons 1-3.

The catch to this deal is that it will only run for two months on Max. Beyond that, the AMC shows will presumably revert to being AMC+ exclusives.

“AMC Networks makes great shows, and our goal is to bring these shows to as many people as possible, in ways that best serve viewers,” said AMC Studios President Dan McDermott in a statement. “This promotional arrangement with Warner Bros. Discovery is a terrific opportunity to serve up some of our most popular and critically acclaimed programming to millions of Max subscribers in the U.S. for two full months.”

“Subscribers turn to Max to find a deep and diverse selection of stories for the whole household,” added Warner Bros. Discovery’s Meredith Gertler. “The AMC+ collection pop-up is an excellent example of how we can use innovative strategies to add value to our content offering.”

AMC+ Picks on Max will run through October 31. And that dovetails nicely with CNN Max, which hits the service on September 27.

What’s new on HBO and Max in December 2024
Jenna Ortega in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.

Earlier this year, Warner Bros.' Beetlejuice Beetlejuice was the big hit of the fall, and now HBO and Max get to host the streaming debut of that film on December 6. A day earlier, Max will get a jump on next year's new DC Universe slate with the premiere of James Gunn's Creature Commandos, an animated series about a group of monstrous comic book characters teaming up for covert missions.

Intriguingly, Max is adding the animated adaptations of The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Return of the King from the '70s and '80s in the same month that The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is hitting theaters. Peter Jackson's LOTR trilogy unseated those earlier adaptations in the minds of many, and the animation doesn't hold up very well. But it's still fun to look back at the first attempt to bring J.R.R. Tolkien's novels to the visual medium.

2024’s most divisive thriller is finally streaming on Max. Here’s why you should watch it
A man is being tortured in Trap.

M. Night Shyamalan is one of the most divisive filmmakers of the past 30 years. After achieving breakout success in the late '90s and early 2000s with acclaimed thrillers like The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, and Signs, his reputation began to sour following the releases of largely critical failures like The Village, Lady in the Water, and The Happening. In recent years, Shyamalan has experienced a late-career resurgence writing and directing modestly budgeted, high-concept thrillers (see: Split, Old, Knock at the Cabin). He remains, however, one of Hollywood's most polarizing directors.

You need look no further than the reception to his latest film, Trap, for proof of that. The serial killer thriller was both embraced and tossed aside in equal measure when it hit theaters in early August. Some were quick to share their praise for the film's technical craftsmanship and perfectly pitched lead performance, while others dismissed it based on Shyamalan's consistently stiff dialogue and its absurdly twisty third act. Now, several months later, Trap is officially streaming on Max.

The 10 most popular shows on (HBO) Max right now
The cast of The Sex Lives of College Girls.

The more things change, the more the most popular shows on (HBO) Max tend to stay the same. Dune: Prophecy retains its grip on the No. 1 slot, as there aren't any other HBO original dramas to challenge it. The returning Max original series The Sex Lives of College Girls and the new DC animated show Creature Commandos have found their way on the list this month as well.

By now, it shouldn't be shocking when reality shows from the Discovery networks land on this list as well. But it is surprising to see Sister Wives at No. 2 on the list, followed by 90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days. Like them or not, those shows have an audience.
