Note: Before going any further, be sure that you’re running the latest version of Home. This can be done by going to Home Settings and selecting Software Update.

The Home iPad app works on Apple Vision Pro

As long as you’ve updated to the latest Home architecture, you’ll be able to access it through your Apple Vision Pro. This is essentially the iPad version of the platform that allows  you to set up and control a variety of devices — including smart thermostats, smart lights, and more. Here’s a rundown of a few popular Home features that are supported by Apple Vision Pro:

  • Adding accessories
  • Adding Matter accessories
  • Grouping rooms into zones
  • Adding another home
  • Previewing camera feeds
  • Creating automations

Apple notes that, as usual, Matter-enabled products will “require a home hub, such as a HomePod speaker or Apple TV 4K.” That means if you have any of these products, your headset won’t be serving as a hub device for them. That’s not the biggest drawback — after all, there’s a good chance one of the supported hubs is already lying around your home — but it would have been nice if the headset itself could serve this role.

It’s a similar story for Thread accessories, which “require a Thread-enabled home hub, such as Apple TV 4K (3rd Generation) Wi-Fi plus Ethernet, HomePod mini, or a supported third-party border router.”

In other words, you’re essentially getting the traditional iPad Home experience translated to Apple Vision Pro. That’s a great starting point for the headset, and it should give fans another way to control their smart home.

Nothing new was introduced to Home with Apple Vision Pro

It’s great to have support for the existing Apple Home app while donning the Apple Vision Pro, but no new functionality or features have been implemented with the launch of the headset. Some Home users had been hoping for updated overlays for specific products or unique ways to activate smart home devices from the headset. Instead, they simply got another way to access the existing Home app.

Apple seems to be heavily invested in the smart home space, so it’ll be interesting to see if any big upgrades come to the Home app later this year. For now, you’ll at least be able to enjoy the iPad app.

Host a flawless Thanksgiving with these smart home tips
Philips Hue Smart Dimmable LED Smart Light Recipe Kit lifestyle

Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and if you’re worried about hosting a great party this year, know that your smart home is here to help. We’ve pulled together some simple ways your smart home can be optimized to help you host a flawless Thanksgiving. From building a cozy atmosphere with smart lights to setting Quick Replies on your video doorbell, here’s a look at how your smart home can help throw a stress-free Thanksgiving.
Create a temporary smart lock password

Many smart locks allow you to program temporary passcodes -- and this is an incredibly useful feature when you're hosting. Instead of telling all your guests your permanent passcode, you can create a temporary code that’ll only work on Thanksgiving. This ensures your friends and family can let themselves inside your home if you’re busy without giving them free rein to barge in other times of the year. We’ve put together a comprehensive guide on how to create temporary codes on the Yale Assure Lock 2, but you’ll find a similar process available for most other smart locks.

Echo Show 21 vs. Echo Show 15 (2nd Gen): which is best for your smart home?
Amazon's new Echo Show 21 and updated Echo Show 15.

Amazon just released two new smart displays -- the completely new Echo Show 21 and the updated Echo Show 15 (2nd Gen). Both are premium options for your home, offering powerful speakers, Full HD displays, and heaps of useful apps so you can stream videos or check your schedule. But which is the better option? The gigantic Echo Show 21, or the updated Echo Show 15 (2nd Gen)? Here’s a closer look at both to help you decide.
Pricing and design

The Echo Show 21 is the biggest member of the Echo Show family, and it’s got the price tag to prove it. Clocking in at $400, it’s a hefty investment. Its design is pretty premium, however, and it can be either mounted on a wall or placed on a table with an adjustable stand (sold separately). The Echo Show 15 looks much the same, though it’s quite a bit smaller. But from a design standpoint, it’s essentially a shrunken version of the Echo Show 21. It too can be mounted on a wall or placed on a table with an optional adjustable stand. But at $300, it’s much easier on the wallet.

Chamberlain myQ Smart Garage Security Camera -- $30 $50 41% off

While this is ostensibly made for your garage, there's no reason the Chamberlain myQ Smart Garage can't work for other uses as well, especially if you don't need the highest quality of recording. It has an HD camera, which isn't a ton, but it does have an impressive 130-degree field of view. The MyQ also connects through dual-band Wi-Fi for a better connection, and it even has two-way communication, which is impressive for something at this price bracket.
