3 outstanding PS Plus games to play this weekend (June 14-16)

The most announcement-filled week of gaming has wrapped up. From Summer Game Fest to the Xbox Games Showcase and Ubisoft Forward, there was a ton of big gaming news. Many of the games revealed are coming to PlayStation 5, too. On top of that, Sony’s Days of Play initiative is still in full swing, which means some more PS2 games finally got PS4 and PS5 ports for the first time in several years. As a result, there’s no shortage of relevant games in the PlayStation Plus Premium and Extra catalog to check out if you’re looking for something to play this weekend.

Three titles stand out to me in particular. The first is the game that cemented the status of a pillar franchise for PlayStation and is getting reinterpreted as a Lego game for kids later this year. Next, there’s a Dragon Ball game that looks even better than the manga and anime it’s based on and is a nice companion piece to a Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero, which launches later this year. Finally, I’m recommending the PS2 classic that put Sucker Punch Productions on the map.

Horizon Forbidden West

A still from Horizon Zero Dawn.
Sony Interactive Entertainment

In 2017, Killzone developer Guerilla Games kicked off a new franchise with Horizon Zero Dawn. It quickly became a hallmark franchise for PlayStation, receiving an expansion on PS4 and a direct sequel on PS5. A TV show adaptation is in the works at Netflix, and at Summer Game Fest 2024, we learned that the mature series is getting more kid-friendly with the co-op action game Lego Horizon Adventures. OAfter all of that, I’m recommending that you check out the game available through PS Plus Extra’s game catalog: 2022’s Horizon Forbidden West.

If you play this sequel, you’ll discover one of the most beautiful PS5 games, which is set in a postapocalyptic world where tech and nature clash. There’s a captivating narrative bolstered by some solid voice performances and combat centered around hunting robotic creatures. It can get quite tense. Lego Horizon Adventures will retell the events of Zero Dawn and Forbidden West as well, so it’s worth replaying so you get a refresher and understand what is going on before that.

Horizon Forbidden West is available on PS4 and PS5 through the PlayStation Plus Extra game catalog. It also came to PC earlier this year.

Dragon Ball FighterZ

Bandai Namco Entertainment

A standout from Summer Game Fest this year was Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero, a spectacle-filled 3D fighter that marks the grand return of the Budokai Tenkaichi series. If 2D fighters are more of your speed, I’d recommend checking out Dragon Ball FighterZ on PS Plus instead. Released in 2018 by Arc System Works and Bandai Namco Entertainment, Dragon Ball FighterZ is one of the best-looking fighting games out there thanks to its slick animation style that makes it look like the manga or anime come to life.

On top of that, it features tons of depth in its fighting game mechanics and approachable combos that make Dragon Ball FighterZ friendly to newcomers. Dragon Ball FighterZ plays pretty differently than Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero, making the two games nice companion pieces. There are some other Dragon Ball games in the PS Plus game catalog for fans, like Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 and Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot.

The PS4 version of Dragon Ball FighterZ is available via the PlayStation Plus Extra game catalog. It’s also available on PC, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch.

Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus

Gameplay from Sly Cooper.
Sony Interactive Entertainment

Although it isn’t directly related to any Summer Game Fest announcement this year, Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus is a personal favorite of mine and a PS2 classic that just came to PS4 and PS5 as part of this year’s Days of Play initiative. For those who don’t know, Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus follows the titular raccoon thief and his band of thieves as they fight back against the Fiendish Five, who stole the titular book written by Sly’s ancestors.

When it comes to gameplay, Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus is unique in being a stealth platformer where players are often trying to sneak around and avoid enemies as much as they’re trying to reach the end of the level. From its style to its story and gameplay, Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus is a good time all around. Previously, those interested in this game could try it by streaming a PS3 game collection it was included in, but that’s no longer the case as the game is now natively emulated on modern PlayStation consoles.

PS4 and PS5 ports of Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus are available to PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers.

3 PS Plus games you should play this weekend (January 3-5)
Key art for Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut.

While 2025 has just begun, we already know about some of the biggest games coming to the PlayStation 5 this year. Ghost of Yotei, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, and Grand Theft Auto VI, in particular, stand out as potential defining PS5 releases for 2025 right now. Luckily for those of us who subscribed to PlayStation Plus Extra, the predecessors to all three of those games are available to play as part of the Sony game subscription service's catalog. As such, those games make up my list of recommendations for new PS Plus Extra games to play to kick off the new year.

Sucker Punch Productions will release Ghost of Yotei later this year, giving us yet another open-world action-adventure game set in Japan. While it isn't a direct sequel, I still think it's a good idea to check out Ghost of Tsushima before playing Ghost of Yotei. Sucker Punch Productions' last game instantly cemented Ghost as a new hallmark series for Sony; the enhanced Director's Cut version of the game is still one of the best-looking titles that you can play on PS5. And while I'm not quite as fond of the story and gameplay compared to other games, if you enjoy games like Assassin's Creed Mirage or Red Dead Redemption 2, then Ghost of Tsushima's realistic open world will really immerse you. After playing Ghost of Tsushima, you'll have a better understanding of the foundation that Ghost of Yotei will be building on and will more clearly see how it evolves and improves upon that formula.

Key art for Star Wars: Tales from Galaxy's Edge - Enhanced Edition.

Did you just get a PlayStation 5, PS5 Pro, or PlayStation VR2 for Christmas? If so, you've come to the right place. One of the best things you can do is buy a PlayStation Plus Premium or Extra subscription, as that will give you access to a large catalog of games from every PlayStation platform to check out on your new hardware. As for more specific recommendations, this week I want to highlight some of the hidden gems that were part of December's addition to PS Plus. That includes a Star Wars game that's one of the best PSVR2 titles, an eerie Alien game that you only have another week or so to claim, and an underrated 2023 indie.

One standout launch title for PSVR2 was Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy's Edge -- Enhanced Edition. This is a VR game that does a fantastic job of whisking players away and immersing them in various parts of the Star Wars world as a Jedi, bounty hunter, and more. That includes a digital version of Batuu, the planet that Galaxy's Edge at Disneyland and Disney World is based on. It's still one of the best games you can play on PSVR2 and worth checking out for any Star Wars fan. In general, PS Plus Premium's VR game catalog is worth it for anyone who owns Sony's headset. Tales from the Galaxy's Edge is simply the latest cherry on top.

3 new PS Plus games that you should play this weekend (December 20-22)
Frey in Square Enix's Forspoken.

The latest batch of new PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium game catalog additions was released this week. As a result, PS Plus subscribers have a ton of new options when it comes to what to play as we approach what is many people's holiday break. Games from this most recent batch are what I'm recommending people check out this weekend. One of the titles is technically a Christmas game, so it's fitting to play this time of year, while my other recommendations are good options if you're looking for something to play with others.
Forspoken
Forspoken - Official Launch Trailer

Square Enix's Forspoken is a high-profile action RPG console exclusive that was released on PlayStation 5 in 2023. While its quip-heavy dialogue definitely isn't for everyone, the way it incorporates the player's magical abilities into combat and traversal is truly exhilarating. Dashing through large fields, surfing on top of water, and launching bullet-like streams of rocks at enemies is immensely satisfying. Forspoken's Isekai adventure technically begins with the main character, Frey, being whisked away from New York City around Christmas. That technically makes this a Christmas game, giving you all the more reason to check it out this weekend.
