Play these 3 games before they leave Xbox Game Pass this weekend (August 23-25)

While Xbox Game Pass is still getting plenty of new games, some titles do leave the service every 15 days. At the end of August, we’re losing some particularly good ones. If you’re a fan of sports games, fighting games, or narrative-driven first-person shooters, then you’ll want to play at least one of these games this weekend.

Don’t fret that these games are leaving Xbox Game Pass, though. Xbox will be releasing Age of Mythology: Retold, Ara: History Untold, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, Towerborne, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle on Xbox Game Pass this fall.

Focus Entertainment

With stunning visuals and a weird sense of humor, Atomic Heart is quite memorable. It’s a BioShock-like first-person shooter in which players explore a postapocalyptic Russian dystopia an fight all sorts of mechanical and biological monstrosities along the way. Players have some pretty wild weapons and abilities at their disposal, so combat is quite entertaining and flashy. You also have the benefit of playing with a year-and-a-half worth of updates now, so technical issues have been resolved, and the Trapped in Limbo and Annihilation Instinct DLC are there to provide even more content once you beat the game. Atomic Heart leaves Xbox Game Pass on August 31. After that, you’ll need to buy it on PC, PlayStation 5, or Xbox Series X/S.

Guilty Gear Strive

Arc System Works

While not quite as well-known as Street Fighter or Tekken, the Guilty Gear series has a die-hard fan base that adores it. Guilty Gear Strive is the most recent, and best, game in the series. It sports the complex depth you’d expect from a 2D fighting game if that’s what you’re here for, but its visuals are also excellent. Arc System Works built upon the visual style it established with Dragon Ball FighterZ, making Guilty Gear Strive really feel like a playable anime. It’s still actively getting updates, too; Lucy from Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is coming to the game next year. Play a few matches before it leaves Xbox Game Pass, and you’ll probably get hooked. Guilty Gear Strive leaves Xbox Game Pass on August 31, but it will be available afterwards on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

NBA 2K24

2K

NBA 2K25 will launch on September 6, so 2K is pulling NBA 2K24 from Xbox Game Pass just before that. At this point, Visual Concepts’ basketball game series needs little introduction, as it’s one of the best sports games out there. The on-the-court gameplay is quite refined at this point, with NBA 2K24’s particular improvements being cross-platform play and improved animations. If you enjoy this annual sports game series, but have been playing its latest via Microsoft’s subscription service, definitely get some more games in this weekend. Like the other games I’ve mentioned, NBA 2K24 leaves Xbox Game Pass on August 31. After that, you’ll need to buy it on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, or Nintendo Switch. There’s also an Arcade Edition available via Apple Arcade.

3 new Xbox Game Pass games to play this weekend (October 25-27)
A player holds a dead player as a body shield in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6.

It's Call of Duty week on Xbox Game Pass. Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 launched today, and from day one, it's a part of Game Pass Ultimate's game catalog. It's one of the big payoffs of Microsoft's $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard. Depending on how it performs, it may be one of the most important games to ever come to the subscription service. On top of that, other Call of Duty games finally got Xbox Cloud Gaming support, which required collaboration with Ubisoft because of certain concessions made during the Activision Blizzard acquisition process. If you're an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscriber wondering what you should play this weekend, the obvious answer is Call of Duty.

After four years, the Call of Duty: Black Ops series has made its grand return. It brings the series' story to the 1990s with a spy-movie-like campaign that sees players investigate a secret, nefarious organization that has infiltrated the American government. While the campaign alone is reason enough to check out the new Call of Duty on Xbox Game Pass, Black Ops 6 also features meaty multiplayer and Zombies modes. Multiplayer is as exhilarating as ever, with an emphasis being placed on an "omnimovement" system that allows players to dive, roll, and dodge enemies with a lot more freedom than they could before. Meanwhile, Zombies mode finds a solid balance between old and new mechanics. Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is available via PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Xbox Cloud Gaming with a Game Pass Ultimate subscription. It's also on PS4 and PS5.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III technically came to the subscription service in July but was restricted to PC and console play. Now, alongside Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, Modern Warfare III is playable via Xbox Cloud Gaming for Game Pass Ultimate subscribers. This was a lesser entry in the series with a disappointing campaign, but if you're looking for another premium Call of Duty game to try after playing lots of Black Ops 6, Modern Warfare III is the only other one on the service. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III is available to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers across PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Xbox Cloud Gaming. It's also on PS4 and PS5.
Call of Duty: Warzone
Finally, Call of Duty: Warzone also comes to Xbox Cloud Gaming today. This free-to-play battle royale title doesn't require any sort of subscription to play normally, but Game Pass subscribers now have the benefit of not needing to be tethered down by specific hardware. So far, there aren't any other additional in-game perks for Game Pass subscribers, but hopefully Warzone will follow Overwatch 2's lead and add some soon enough. If you aren't using Xbox Cloud Gaming, Call of Duty: Warzone is playable on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

3 new Xbox Game Pass games to try this weekend (October 18-20)
South Park The Fractured But Whole

While the first half of October was fairly light on new Xbox Game Pass additions, the back half of the month is a lot more exciting. Of course, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is the month's biggest release, but that's still a week away. Meanwhile, this week saw two great RPGs and an excellent indie game hit Microsoft's subscription service. If you're wondering what you should be playing this weekend, all three of these new Xbox Game Pass additions are worthy of your time.

While this year's South Park: Snow Day was a disappointment, the two Ubisoft-published games that preceded it narratively are stellar. One of those, the superhero-themed South Park: The Fractured But Whole, just came to Xbox Game Pass. This game perfectly captures the handcrafted look of the show with its art and the franchise's crass humor through its increasingly ridiculous story about Cartman, a new kid, and their other friends pretending to be superheroes. It's a surprisingly well-made grid-based tactical RPG, making it a significantly better game than it may seem on the surface.

3 new Xbox Game Pass games to play this weekend (October 11-13)
A screenshot from Inscryption.

We're in somewhat of a lull for Xbox Game Pass right now. While Xbox heavily marketed Metaphor: ReFantazio and launched Persona 3 Reload into its subscription service earlier in 2024, Metaphor:ReFantazio is not on Xbox Game Pass on day one. Thankfully, an all-timer of a horror indie game came to the service this past week, just in time for Halloween. Some other great RPGs also arrived during Tokyo Game Show 2024, so you can check those out on Xbox Game Pass if you're looking for something new to play on the subscription service.
Inscryption
Inscryption - Announcement Trailer (2020)

If you're looking for something spookier to play on Xbox Game Pass this month, then Inscryption is the optimal choice. This indie game became critically acclaimed upon its release in 2021 because of how it wasn't afraid to blend genres and break the fourth wall as players try to break out of a card game they're playing in a remote cabin. It's best to go into Inscryption unspoiled, so I'll just recommend you check it out via PC, One Xbox Series X/S, or Xbox Cloud Gaming with your Game Pass Ultimate subscription. It's also on PlayStation 4, PS5, and Nintendo Switch.
