There’s also a deluxe edition available that’ll cost $100 on PS5 and Xbox and $90 on Switch and PC. This first look at Gamescom, which will be followed by a solo presentation, also revealed the initial peek at gameplay. It looks a lot like recent Civilization releases, although the visuals have gotten an obvious overhaul. Firaxis notes in the product description on Steam that there are other gameplay improvements: the tutorial has been reworked for newcomers, and game veterans will enjoy improved progression, which includes being able to carry over across multiple rounds.

Firaxis creative director Ed Beach said this is the “biggest, most ambitious” title the company has ever developed, so we assume there will be a lot to announce over the coming months.

While Civilization 7 was announced during Summer Game Fest this year, we didn’t learn much of anything about it. The CGI cinematic teaser panned over some familiar world landmarks like the Great Sphinx of Giza, but otherwise, there was no other information revealed. However, 2K promised that there would be a full reveal in August and a release window in 2025.

Is Civilization 7 cross-platform?
Two world leaders, Cleopatra and Caesar, going up against each other in front of their flags.

In today's day and age, launching an upcoming video game as hotly anticipated as Sid Meier's Civilization 7 and not having it be a cross-platform game can be a death sentence. Some of the best PC games like Valorant choose to have limited cross-platform support, while others like Final Fantasy 14 break down all barriers. We already know that this will be the first time the series has launched on consoles at the same time as PC, but has Civilization 7 kept up with the times and included cross-platform support? Let's find out.
Is Civilization 7 cross-platform?

Civilization 7 does have cross-platform support, but with a few catches. The game has fully crossplay between PlayStation, Xbox, PC, and Switch with the use of a 2K account. However, the number of players you can play with in certain modes depends on your platform. On anything but the Switch, up to five players can connect in the Antiquity & Exploration Ages mode and up to eight in the Modern Age mode. Switch players, meanwhile, are limited to four players in the Antiquity & Exploration mode and only six in Modern Age. Switch players are also not expected to be able to play on map sizes of Standard or larger, meaning anyone who wants to crossplay with a Switch player will also be subject to these limitations.

Firaxis wants to make sure you actually finish a Civilization 7 game
A walled city sitting behind a mountain.

Civilization games are easy to get lost in, so much so that I don't think I've ever actually finished one of them. This is apparently a common problem because developer Firaxis Games wanted to address it with Civilization 7.

In an interview with Game Developer, creative director Ed Beach said that less than 50% of players completed a game of Civilization 6 due to its drawn-out pacing, something that many absolutely "hated." Tasks took longer and longer to complete as you went, and as the game became more complicated, players became overloaded with things to do to expand their empires. So Firaxis made some changes.
