Samsung is expected to unveil its Galaxy S25 series next week. Honor beat it to the punch, however, by announcing the worldwide launch of its Magic 7 Pro phone, which will succeed the 2024 Magic 6 Pro.

Originally launched last year in China, this phone has several features that could make it an appealing option for anyone looking for a new Android phone. It was announced at an event in Bled, Slovenia.

The Honor Magic 7 Pro features a design inspired by Honor’s “Square and Round Universe” philosophy that showcases diamond-cut edges. Its 6.8-inch LTPO OLED display boasts a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate for smooth visuals and improved energy efficiency. The display supports HDR10+, delivering vibrant colors and deep blacks while offering Dolby Vision support and a peak brightness of 5,000 nits.

Constructed of metal and glass, the Magic 7 Pro has a pill-shaped cutout on the front that is smaller than that of Apple iPhones. This cutout houses a selfie camera and a sensor for 3D facial recognition. For added security, there is also a 3D Ultrasonic Fingerprint Sensor.

Like other high-end smartphones, the Magic 7 Pro has a triple rear camera setup, including a 50MP primary sensor, a 50MP ultrawide lens, and a 200MP periscope telephoto lens with 3x digital zoom. The system is enhanced with AI capabilities to improve photos and videos, and it options like AI Super Zoom and a new Image Engine.

The phone is powered by Qualcomm’s latest chipset, the Snapdragon 8 Elite, which is also found in the recently released OnePlus 13 and likely the upcoming Galaxy S25 series.

The Magic 7 Pro runs MagicOS 9, based on Android 15. It provides a customized user experience with additional features and optimizations. Google Gemini comes preinstalled on the device, along with an innovative feature called Magic Portal. Honor says this feature allows users to circle objects on the screen for instant text andimage comprehension, and quick access to desired app services.

Notably, the international version of the Magic 7 Pro has a smaller battery capacity than the Chinese variant. It has a 5,270mAh battery, while the Chinese version features a 5,850mAh battery.

Preorders for the Honor Magic 7 Pro in the U.K. start today, January 15. The device is available in Lunar Shadow Gray and Black and costs 1,100 British pounds ($1,351). It includes 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. Prices vary in different locations.

I know which new Samsung phone I’d buy, and it’s not the Galaxy S25 Ultra
The Samsung Galaxy S25, Galaxy S25 Plus, and Galaxy S25 Ultra.

I've picked them up, put them down, used the software, and generally fondled each of the new Samsung Galaxy S25 smartphones. It wasn’t for a long period of time, but it was for several hours over the course of two events, giving me some breathing space to collect my thoughts about each one. It was all the time I needed to make my decision about which one I'd buy.
Go small, but not too small

It may come as a surprise, but I’d go for the usually awkward middle Galaxy S25 model, the Galaxy S25 Plus, over either of the others, despite having used the Galaxy S24 Ultra over the past year. This time I am prepared to forego the best potential camera specification for improved in-hand feel. Samsung has made some changes to the S25 Ultra’s body that I’m not sure I’m entirely onboard with, especially as it has gone in a different (and to me, preferable) direction with the S25 and S25 Plus.

The Samsung Galaxy S25 series has finally launched, and once again, none of the models in the lineup can be considered budget-friendly. Whether you choose the entry-level Galaxy S25, the mid-range Galaxy S25 Plus, or the high-end Galaxy S25 Ultra, these phones come with a hefty price tag. Therefore, it’s essential to understand the conditions they can withstand.

The Galaxy S25 series is equipped with the all-new Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, which offers notable improvements in speed and efficiency. These devices come with enhanced vapor chamber cooling to maintain performance and Qi2 wireless charging for quicker power-ups, and they operate on the new One UI 7 software, which includes AI-powered personalization features. The designs are understated, blending familiar aesthetics with upgraded hardware and innovative software capabilities.

Samsung Galaxy S25 series barely makes a case for itself

Samsung’s flashy Unpacked event, earlier today, kicked off with chatter about AI, coming straight from its mobile business chief. Throughout the event, AI was a recurring theme, hijacking the talk away from exciting hardware innovation.

One of my colleagues even joked about not knowing the phone’s screen size despite the event entering its latter half. It was merely a sign of certain unsavory things to come, along with copious amounts of Apple “inspirations.”
