Warcraft, the World of Warcraft film adaptation, has been given a release date. According to a report from Deadline, the film will hit theaters on December 18, 2015.

There was a time, very recently, when it seemed like Warcraft was doomed to fall into film limbo. Director Sam Raimi had left, taking with him both his skill and his clout, and on the way out he accused Blizzard of being difficult to work with. Neither Universal or Legendary Pictures discussed giving up on the film, but losing an A-list director like Raimi was a difficult blow to overcome. A similar fate befell the Uncharted film when David O. Russell, and then Neil Burger, both were attached and then left. That film has yet to name a replacement.

Duncan Jones took over as director in early 2013. He may not have the same name recognition as Raimi, but he is coming off successful back-to-back critically acclaimed films, Moon and The Source Code, which have earned him a solid reputation.

The release date also follows a bevy of casting rumors. Colin Farrell, Anton Yelchin, and Paula Patton have all been rumored to be in discussions, and even if none of those actors sign up, it does show that the project is advancing at a good pace.

Warcraft is one of the many coming films that hope to end the video-game-to-film-adaptation stigma that has been well earned following years of underperforming properties that were box office bombs and loathed by critics and fans alike. Other films, like Assassin’s Creed, Splinter Cell, and Warcraft could be the first of a new wave of blockbuster video game releases that actually work.

Warcraft and Diablo devs reveal the focus of Phil Spencer’s Blizzard visit
Phil Spencer at BlizzCon 2023. He's presenting on a stage in a black jacket.

Microsoft completed its acquisition of Activision Blizzard in October, and shortly thereafter, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer confirmed on the Official Xbox Podcast that he was going to visit Activision Blizzard studios in the coming weeks. Spencer did so prior to BlizzCon 2023, where he also ended up making an appearance during the Opening Ceremony to reaffirm Xbox's commitment to support all of Blizzard's major franchises. To get a better idea of what Spencer's studio visit and BlizzCon appearance felt like for Blizzard developers, we asked John Hight, Warcraft franchise general manager, and Rod Fergusson, Diablo general manager, about the experience.

"They actually came out a couple of weeks ago, Phil and a lot of his leadership team. What was nice about it was we had prepared all of these PowerPoints and stuff, but they just wanted to meet the teams," Hight told Digital Trends. "They had lunch out in our patio, the cafe. We had hundreds of employees and Phil made himself available just to talk to people. He just wanted to see some of the games and meet some of the people, so we gave him a demo of one of the areas in The War Within for a while, and then we had [game designer] Tom [Chilton] demo Warcraft Rumble. It was fun because we started to go through introductions and I said ‘Clearly you’re having fun playing the game, you can tune out and just play that.' They’ve been very supportive. I think they’re excited by the fact that, especially with Warcraft, we have a diversity of games and platforms that we’re building for.”

Warcraft developers lay out a grand vision for the franchise’s future
A still from World of Warcraft The Worldsoul Saga's reveal tralier.

World of Warcraft turns 20 next year, while the franchise itself will celebrate its 30-year anniversary. Ahead of those massive milestones, Blizzard went big with Warcraft at BlizzCon 2023. It launched a new mobile game, teased impending World of Warcraft Classic and Hearthstone updates, and announced three new World of Warcraft expansions that will make up The Worldsoul Saga. To franchise general manager John Hight, the series' strong showing was about demonstrating to players that Blizzard is doubling down on Warcraft.

“We wanted to tell our players that we’re doubling down on [World of Warcraft’s] story. A lot of our players have told us over the last two expansions that story is so important,” Hight told Digital Trends in an interview at BlizzCon 2023. “It is different for us at Blizzard because, normally, we’re a little bit secretive, but we felt like our fans were telling us they want to know more about what’s in store for them. It’s tricky to weave that in such a way that we didn’t spoil it.”

Warcraft Rumble devs are ready to learn from their mistakes
Key art for the Alliance in Warcraft Rumble.

Before he worked on Warcraft Rumble, its associate game director, Adam Kugler, did not play many mobile games.

Kugler was lead class designer on World of Warcraft, and at one point during Warcraft Rumble's development, he went to lunch with game director Tom Chilton to get some advice. While Kugler wanted to get guidance on where to take the MMO next, Chilton pitched working on Warcraft Rumble to Kugler and convinced him to check out some mobile games and get a better idea of the space. When he returned on Monday, Kugler had been won over by the idea of a Warcraft mobile game and jumped ship from World of Warcraft to work on a new title shortly after that.
