The organizers behind the April 11-13 PAX East event in Boston, Mass. announced that a new show will join the Penny Arcade Expo family beginning in 2015. The freshly announced PAX South will take place in San Antonio, Texas, and the inaugural event will be held January 23-25, 2015.

“The new show will build on the foundation of the PAX format giving fans a healthy mix of the latest and greatest in video games, tabletop games, game inspired music, competitive gameplay, and insight from leaders in the world of gaming,” the press release states. “The annual events give gamers a PAX show for every season throughout the year.”

The PAX events first began in 2004 with PAX Prime in Seattle. PAX East followed in 2010, and PAX Australia began in 2013. A private event for developers, PAX Dev, takes place as a prelude to PAX Prime, but it is not open to the public.

“Since its launch in 2004, PAX events have doubled in size almost every year, and our Seattle and Boston events represent the two largest gaming festivals in North America,” Robert Khoo, Penny Arcade President said, “We’ve been hearing for years that those in the south had a tough time making it to the northern corners of the country; PAX South has always been a matter of ‘when’ rather than ‘if.'”

Next up for the organizers is PAX Prime, which kicks off in Seattle, Wash. on August 29 and runs through September 1, 2014 (with PAX Dev occurring right before on August 27-28). Tickets have not gone on sale yet, but they should have no problem moving. Last year’s tickets sold out in just over six hours.

A new Tales from the Borderlands game is coming this year
Borderlands heroes stand under a tall arch in a new Tales From the Borderlands game.

Gearbox and 2K Games will be releasing a new Tales from the Borderlands game sometime this year.

The original Tales from the Borderlands was an episodic adventure developed by Telltale Games and was met with a largely positive reception. However, the studio eventually shut down after a tumultuous period in 2018, but was purchased and revived as a brand by LCG Entertainment in 2019. The team is currently working on the recently announced Wolf Among Us 2, which is set to release in 2023.

PAX West 2021 was a smaller show, and it was better for it
A person holding a sign announcing a line is full

By the midpoint of the first day, pictures and videos from PAX West had spread to social media. Missing were the massive displays for big-name titles; console manufacturers and major studios were all noticeably absent. The list of vendors and schedule of panels had lessened considerably. Some online commenters were quick to ridicule and say they were glad to have not wasted their time or money on the event. A corner of the internet had decided, just hours into a four-day show, that PAX West was a dud.

They were wrong. The story of PAX West 2021 wasn’t about the big players that weren’t there, or the crowd-drawing keynote speakers that didn’t show up. Quite the opposite. The story of PAX West 2021 is about the little guys.

PAX West will require proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test for entry
Ac rowd gathers at PAX West in 2017.

PAX West, the Seattle-based gaming convention run by Penny Arcade and ReedPop, has reversed its lax stance on COVID safety. Anyone attending the event will now need either proof that they've been vaccinated or a recent, negative COVID-19 PCR or antigen test.

PAX West 2020 was canceled, like many other events, due to the coronavirus pandemic last year. The event and its organizers quickly drew criticism earlier this year for announcing that the event would take place in person without any vaccination requirements. Along with a negative COVID-19 test or proof of vaccination, attendees of PAX West will need to provide a "valid, government-issued ID."
