Cortana for Android leaks, if you want to try it right now

We’ve known for a couple of months that Microsoft is launching a Cortana app for Android, and now it’s here — sort of. An early build of the app has leaked which you can find by following the Google Drive link posted at TalkAndroid, though bear in mind this is an unofficial early release, so you might come across several bugs.

At the time of writing, the original link wasn’t available due to high traffic so you might have to source an alternative one.

You need to enable the installation of APKs from unknown sources on your Android device (the option is in the Security section of Settings) then sync the file over with something like Dropbox. Most users are probably happy to wait until the official release, but plenty of people have already given this early leak a whirl and it seems to function perfectly well.

The official word from Microsoft is that they are indeed testing Cortana for Android with a limited number of users in the U.S. and China, and an official beta version of the software is coming in “the next few weeks.” It’s a big year of expansion for Cortana as it’s also going to arrive on the desktop with the imminent launch of Windows 10.

As far as functionality goes, this version of the Android app looks very much like the Windows Phone equivalent: You can access your Cortana notebook (where the app stores information on you), bring up upcoming events, scout around nearby places, check the weather, view sports scores, and more. Like Google Now and Siri, it can give quick answers to questions.

The app looks a lot like the version spotted in Windows 10 and once the Android and iOS versions are officially launched you’ll be able to take Microsoft’s digital assistant everywhere you go. Can Cortana succeed where Windows 10 failed? We’ll have to wait and see.

Niagara Launcher, one of the most popular apps in the Google Play Store, has received a significant update. It now includes a backup feature, which many users have requested. The news about Niagra’s “Winter Update” was announced on X.

The new backup feature allows launcher users to save their settings for future restoration. This is especially helpful for those switching phones, resetting their devices, or experimenting with different setups. It integrates with Android’s built-in backup system, automatically saving your settings to Google Drive. This backup includes user favorites, app swipe actions, blacklisted apps, and more.

Lock Screen of Nothing OS 3.

After weeks of beta testing, Nothing is the latest name to join the stable Android 15 rollout bandwagon. In a community update today, the company announced the wide release of Nothing OS 3.0 based on Android 15 for its relatively slim smartphone portfolio.

The first devices to get the update are the Nothing Phone 2 and Nothing Phone 2a, both of which are slated to get the over-the-air (OTA) update in a phased format throughout December. Next in line are the Nothing Phone 1, Nothing Phone 2a Plus, and CMF Phone 1, which are scheduled to receive the OS upgrade early next year.

Another Nothing Phone can now download the Android 15 beta
The Nothing Phone 2, Nothing Phone 2a, and Nothing Phone 2a Plus.

Nothing has been running an open beta of Android 15 with Nothing OS 3.0 for several of its devices, including the Nothing Phone 2, Phone 2a, and CMF Phone 1. But now, if you have a Nothing Phone 2a Plus, you can also get the Android 15 beta.

The Nothing Phone 2a Plus is a bit of a weird phone. It’s another phone in the trend of manufacturers releasing something that is “new-but-not-really,” because the Nothing Phone 2a Plus is mostly the same as the Nothing Phone 2a, but with a slight bump in specs.
