Twin Peaks revival adds Naomi Watts, Tom Sizemore to cast

By now, you’ve probably heard about David Lynch’s upcoming Twin Peaks revival. The project recently made news when Showtime released a trailer for the resurrected cult-hit, and yesterday, we got some major casting news.

Both Naomi Watts (The Impossible) and Tom Sizemore (Saving Private Ryan) have joined the cast, according to Deadline, though their exact roles are still under wraps. Watts, in particular, had been a target for producers for quite some time and the actress was first contacted back in October.

A continuation of the hit series that aired from April 1990 to June 1991, the new Twin Peaks was scripted by series creators David Lynch and Mark Frost and is scheduled for an 18-episode arc. Lynch and Frost originally wrote the revival as a longer, continuous movie, but it was later divided into individual episodes.

Once scheduled for a 2016 release, the project was pushed back late last year and was given an unspecified 2017 release. When it does debut, it will air on Showtime and its accompanying streaming platforms.

While this series is taking a somewhat circuitous route to the small screen, these latest additions should help to bolster what’s already looking like a fairly strong cast. Watts and Sizemore will join newbies like Amanda Seyfried (Les Miserables) and Balthazar Getty (The Judge), along with recurring characters such as Kyle MacLachlan (Special Agent Dale Cooper), and Sheryl Lee (Laura Palmer and Maddy Ferguson).

Lynch will direct the series and is also rumored to be reprising his role from the original Twin Peaks: FBI Regional Bureau Chief Gordon Cole.

With the return of Lynch, Frost, and several key characters, the titular town should feel fairly familiar — but there’s still a long road between fans and a return to Twin Peaks.

The past 25 years of cinema have been overshadowed by the emergence of superhero movies as a driving box office force, so much so that filmmakers like Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, and James Cameron have openly hoped that the genre would go the way of the Western. Given the emergence of superhero fatigue — especially with Sony's Marvel films like Madame Web and Kraven the Hunter — they may get their wish. But if there was one movie from the turn of the century that was ahead of the curve, it was Mystery Men, the superhero spoof that hit theaters in 1999. It's also our pick for the one Amazon Prime Video movie that you need to watch in January.

At the time that Mystery Men was released, the only Marvel movie that had any traction was Blade, and DC was coming off of the disastrous Batman & Robin. Comparatively, Dark Horse Comics had a good run of comic book movies in the 1990s including The Mask, Timecop, and, of course, Mystery Men. The source material was writer and artist Bob Burden's Flaming Carrot Comics, a title that has never crossed into the mainstream. But it turned out to be an early predictor of what the superhero genre would become. In fact, Mystery Men may be even more timely in 2025 than it was at the time of its release.

Thirty years ago, Empire Records crashed and burned in theaters with only $303,841 in a very limited release. 20 years later, one superhero flop reveals the empty nostalgia of Deadpool & Wolverine

Last year, Deadpool & Wolverine surprised comic book fans when it came out and was revealed to be — more than anything else — a eulogy for the 20th Century Fox era of Marvel movies. The film pays homage in ways alternately humorous and sincere to everything from Logan and X2: X-Men United to Blade and 2005's Fantastic Four, and it even manages to acknowledge the unrealized, Channing Tatum-led Gambit. Tatum, Wesley Snipes, and Chris Evans all make cameos in the Deadpool sequel, as does Jennifer Garner.

The latter actress reprises her role of Elektra in Deadpool & Wolverine, appearing as one of the many Fox-created Marvel variants who was unceremoniously pulled out of her alternate timeline and sent to the Void. Garner's cameo allows Deadpool & Wolverine to reference not only 2003's Daredevil, in which she made her big-screen debut as Elektra, but also 2005's Elektra, a spin-off that proved to be even more disastrous than its predecessor. As it does with every Fox-produced Marvel movie, Deadpool & Wolverine asks viewers to look back at Elektra with a bit of rose-colored, nostalgia-fueled appreciation.
