Mercedes-Maybach’s S650 Cabriolet puts the top down and amps the opulence up

It was only a matter of time. Mercedes-Maybach made its triumphant return to form in 2014 with the incredible S600, and two years later, the brand is debuting its very first convertible — the stunning S650 Cabriolet.

Based on the existing Mercedes-Benz S-Class Cabriolet, the S650 adds a myriad of touches fit for a king. Considering the vehicle wears a Maybach badge, we wouldn’t expect anything less. The car gets a new front bumper, as well as numerous chrome accents on its exterior, and the S650 wears 20-inch forged bichromatic wheels that are exclusive to Maybach.

When you open either of the vehicle’s doors, the Maybach logo is projected onto the ground by way of welcome lighting, which brings us to the lavish interior. Nearly every surface is trimmed in high-end leather, and the seats feature a gorgeous waterfall pattern achieved with progressive perforations. Mercedes calls the design “flowing lines,” and the smooth aesthetic cascades from the seats to the trim, each element of which is commissioned individually based on the customer’s preference. The car even comes with a special Maybach luggage set, which is of course color-matched to the interior setup the buyer chooses.

Power comes from a 6.0-liter biturbo V12 that produces a whopping 621 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque, all of which is sent to the rear wheels through a seven-speed automatic transmission. Ride quality is obviously a hallmark of Mercedes-Maybach products, and the S650’s air suspension offers variable damping to ensure a pillowy, stress-free experience. Just 300 examples of the convertible will be produced, and just 75 of those will be coming to the United States.

Pricing information for the S650 hasn’t been published yet, but considering the Mercedes-Maybach S600 costs $191,300, we expect the droptop model to surpass the $200,000 mark and establish itself as one of the most coveted, opulent vehicles on the market.

Mini’s infotainment system is very charming, but still needs work
Main screen of the Mini infotainment system

When you think Mini, you probably don’t think of infotainment. Personally, I think of the British flag taillights, the distinct exterior, and the surprising room on the inside. But after driving the Mini John Cooper Works Countryman over the past week, infotainment might well be something I think of more often when it comes to Mini. It’s charming.

It also, however, suffers from all the traps that other legacy automakers fall into when it comes to software design. Mini has something on its hands here — but it still needs some work.
Bringing the charm
The first thing that stood out to me about the system when I got in the car was how fun it was. That all starts with the display. It’s round! No, it’s not curved — the screen is a big, round display sits in at 9.4 inches, and I found it plenty large enough for day-to-day use.

Plug-in hybrids are becoming more popular. Why? And will it continue?
Kia Niro EV Charging Port

There's a lot of talk about the idea that the growth in electric car sales has kind of slowed a little. It's not all that surprising -- EVs are still expensive, early adopters all have one by now, and they're still new enough to where there aren't too many ultra-affordable used EVs available. But plenty of people still want a greener vehicle, and that has given rise to an explosion in hybrid vehicle sales.

That's especially true of plug-in hybrid vehicles, which can be charged like an EV and driven in all-electric mode for short distances, and have a gas engine as a backup for longer distances or to be used in combination with electric mode for more efficient driving.
