Land Rover’s Discovery Sport will emerge from the woods September 3

When’s the last time you saw a Land Rover LR2 on the road? Since the introduction of the Range Rover Evoque, Land Rover’s more practical small SUV has been mostly forgotten.

That will likely change with the introduction of the new Discovery Sport. Announced at the New York Auto Show back in April, it will be unveiled online September 3.

Previously-released teaser shots confirm that the Discovery Sport will share styling cues with the Discovery Vision Concept, which will also provide the template for a full-size Discovery that will replace the current LR4.

Despite its baby-brother status, the Discovery Sport will be offered with an optional third-row seat, although whether it will be suitable for human beings remains to be seen.

The new SUV will ride on a front-wheel drive platform, possibly related to the one used for the Evoque. It will likely be offered with four-cylinder engines exclusively.

Jaguar Land Rover has a line of Ingenium engines cooking, but the first of these isn’t expected to begin production until late 2015. That means it could be awhile before the Discovery Sport (and the Ingenium-powered Jaguar XE, set for a September 8 unveiling) actually hits showrooms.

After a more formal debut at the 2014 Paris Motor Show in October, the Discovery Sport will help Land Rover build a “family” of Discovery models, similar to what it’s created with the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, and Evoque.

In the meantime, enjoy the video of Land Rover putting the Disco Sport through its paces below, and check back for more updates.

It looks like the end of the road for Cruise robotaxis
A Cruise autonomous car.

Autonomous-driving operations at Cruise look certain to end after its main backer, General Motors (GM), said it will stop funding the initiative.

GM, which has owned about 90% of Cruise since 2016, announced the decision in a statement shared on Tuesday. It follows a challenging period for Cruise after one of its autonomous cars ran over a woman after she was knocked into its path by a human-driven car in San Francisco in October 2023. The incident led to California regulators suspending Cruise's license to test its driverless cars on the state's streets, a decision that prompted Cruise to pause operations in other locations where it operated. It restarted low-level testing in Arizona in May 2024.

But it will have to contend with Hyundai’s sister company in order to truly gain the title of best electric SUV in its price range. The Kia EV9 has been a go-to option for a few years now.

But is one of these SUVs actually better, or are they just different? We put the Hyundai Ioniq 9 and the Kia EV9 head to head to find out.
Design
There are some similarities in the designs of the Hyundai Ioniq 9 and the Kia EV9, but they also look a little different. First, the similarities. Both vehicles are clearly SUVs, with larger blocky shapes. But, while the Kia EV9 has straight lines and sharper angles, the Ioniq 9 is a little curvier, with a rounded roofline and sculpted curves in the side panels.
