Mid-level AMG: Mercedes to unleash new AMG Sport sub-brand in Detroit

Mercedes-Benz will travel to next month’s Detroit Motor Show to introduce a long-rumored new sub-brand called AMG Sport. Members of the AMG Sport lineup will slot between standard Mercedes passenger cars equipped with the optional AMG Sport Package and full-blown AMG-tuned models like the C63 that debuted in Paris earlier this year.

The first two members of the AMG Sport lineup will be based on the C-Class and the upcoming GLE Coupe that will make its world debut in the Motor City. The lone teaser image published by Mercedes-Benz suggests that the C450 AMG Sport will stand out from the aforementioned C63 thanks to a less aggressive model-specific body kit, a single-slat radiator grille and new alloy wheel designs.

Concrete details are still few and far between but Mercedes has revealed that the AMG Sport models will generally feature about 125 fewer ponies than their full-blown Mercedes-AMG counterparts. That means the C450 will pack either 351 or 385 horsepower, a number that depends on whether Mercedes will base the output on the C63 or the more potent C63 S. Regardless, a comprehensive list of brake, suspension and chassis upgrades will noticeably improve the driving experience.

Look for full details about the Mercedes-Benz C450 AMG Sport and the GLE 450 Coupe AMG Sport to emerge in the days leading up the Detroit Motor Show. The AMG Sport treatment will gradually be applied to nearly all members of the Mercedes-Benz lineup over the coming years.

For 2025, the EQS takes a step closer to that traditional look with a new grille featuring chrome bars like on the Mercedes S-Class. It also sports the brand's trademark hood ornament.

The updated eSprinter addresses that with a bigger battery pack and features a reengineered electric motor and other components that allow it to be built more easily alongside conventional vans. That’s happening at Mercedes’ factory in North Charleston, South Carolina, which will begin supplying electric vans to customers in the U.S. later this year.
