The RTX 4090 is here, but AMD’s RDNA 3 GPUs are right around the corner

The much-anticipated Radeon RX 7000-series graphics cards will drop on November 3, exactly six weeks from today. This is according to Scott Herkelman, who just happens to be the Senior Vice President and General Manager at AMD Radeon, so the date is definite.

“Join us on November 3rd as we launch RDNA 3 to the world!” Herkelman tweeted earlier today, along with a graphic which said “RDNA 3 Nov.” This means AMD will be announcing the new Radeon GPUs on the same day Nvidia announces its new GeForce RTX 40-series chips.

The Radeon 7000-series graphics cards are designed with 5nm process technology and promise to be 50% more power efficient while delivering higher performance, thanks to the new RDNA 3. These GPUs will also feature a multi-chip module design with both graphics and memory chiplets installed. We’re also expecting them to have a brand new next-generation Infinity Cache, although details are slim on this right now.

Meanwhile, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 and 4080 were unveiled as the first to feature Nvidia’s brand new Ada Lovelace architecture. They can power through real-time ray tracing and neural rendering without breaking a sweat.

“The age of RTX ray tracing and neural rendering is in full steam,” Jensen Huang, Nvidia’s CEO, said in at the GTC keynote on September 20. “Our new Ada Lovelace architecture takes it to the next level.”

It seems news of AMD’s event timing shook up Nvidia, who raced to get some details out about the RTX 40-series GPU. All that’s left is to get our hands on each of these incredible new graphics cards and put them up against each other. With the AMD Ryzen 7000-series processors, Intel 13th gen Raptor Lake processors, new Arc Alchemist graphics cards, and upcoming Radeon GPUs, 2022 really is shaping up to be the year gaming hardware jumped forward.

AMD’s next-gen laptop GPU may rival Nvidia’s RTX 5090

AMD hasn't had much of a presence lately in any of the best gaming laptops -- at least not in the graphics department. However, according to a new leak from Golden Pig Upgrade Pack on Bilibili, AMD isn't giving up on its laptop GPUs, and is in fact readying four discrete graphics cards made for laptops. The top configuration may actually rival one of Nvidia's next-gen top GPUs, but that doesn't mean it'll be equally as good.

The leaker shared a slide detailing the four laptop GPUs that AMD is said to be planning to release in its upcoming RDNA 4 lineup. Although it doesn't reveal the actual names of the graphics cards, it does show the chip names, as well as power consumption ranges and memory configurations.

AMD CEO teases RDNA 4 release as gaming revenue drops by 69%

There's been a lot of speculation about the potential release date for AMD's upcoming RDNA 4 graphics cards. Lisa Su, the CEO of AMD, has just put an end to most of these claims. While initial predictions pinned AMD's future best graphics cards at the end of 2024, AMD now confirms that RDNA 4 is on track to launch in early 2025. This announcement arrives alongside a steep decrease in AMD's gaming revenue.

AMD has been quiet about RDNA 4 (or RX 8000 series) for months, but we've seen many reports from various leakers who had something to say about the potential release date for these next-gen GPUs. At the beginning of 2024, these claims were fairly optimistic, with some leakers claiming that the AMD Radeon RX 8000 series might launch as early as this summer. That did not happen, and as the months went by, many of them adopted a more conservative release window sometime in 2025. Now, thanks to AMD's third-quarter earnings call, we know that those later claims were correct.

If you're wondering about the future of Nvidia's and AMD's top graphics cards, you're not alone. We all know it's almost time for the next generation of GPUs to be released, but no one knows when exactly that's going to happen. Today, another source weighed in with conflicting information regarding the release dates of the RTX 50 series and the RX 8000 series, and honestly, it's all starting to give me whiplash at this point.

At the beginning of 2024, most enthusiasts and leakers alike believed that all three GPU makers -- AMD, Intel, and Nvidia -- would launch their next-gen products before the end of the year. In fact, early leaks pointed to an end-of-summer release for AMD. As time went on, we've all tempered our expectations as it became clear that we're unlikely to see any new graphics cards before early 2025.
