This Kerala Village Has Kitchen-Free Homes, All For The Elderly
Retired Colonel Mathew Murican and his wife Dolly spearheaded this initiative and introduced members into the community. Elderly couples whose children are settled elsewhere have joined this unique project

A unique initiative in Kerala’s Kottayam district has raised new hopes for the elderly. Situated on the banks of the Lalam River, approximately 30 km from Kottayam, this distinctive village offers a fresh perspective on elderly living.
The initiative features 15 small houses, each spanning 724 square feet, specifically designed for elderly couples. Uniquely, these houses comprise two rooms but lack a kitchen. Each house accommodates a single elderly couple.

Residents here boast impressive backgrounds, having previously held prestigious positions such as doctors, engineers, teachers, professors, and army colonels.
Retired Colonel Mathew Murican and his wife, Dolly Mathew, are the initial members of this initiative. They played a crucial role in introducing the other members and making arrangements.
Synergy was recently started on November 2, and so far, seven couples have started living here.
The basic mantra of Synergy is “Do your work yourself and help the weak." This principle has become integral to the life of every member.
Couples, whose children have settled in other cities or abroad, have come here to live a peaceful and collective life.
From lunch to evening tea, every activity is communal. The shared kitchen prepares food for all, and afterwards, residents relax in their individual cottages. Drinking tea together in the evening, even sheltering from the rain with umbrellas, is a cherished part of the daily routine.
Helpfulness and mutual support are paramount in this community. This collective lifestyle not only combats loneliness among the elderly but also fosters a renewed sense of purpose and happiness as they become each other’s support system.
