Our favorites are Glow, an eclipse-like package that cycles through various hues, and Sunrise, which offers a selection of tundra-based sunrise photographs. You can find them by going to Settings > Personalization, then Themes in Windows 11. Take a look at all of them to see which ones you click with the most.

Keep in mind that Windows 11 also has a separate dark mode that you can enable if you prefer, in addition to choosing your visual theme. You can also set your own wallpapers with the Background and Colors options, which allow you to choose a background picture and customize highlight colors to match, strong choices for those who want to put some work into a specialized theme.

With this free theme from Microsoft, you’ll get 18 images featuring things like spring-time landscapes, birds, and cherry blossoms. And don’t be put off by the mention of Windows 10 in the theme’s product listing: Springtime Art still works on Windows 11.

You can get this theme via the Microsoft Store app, where you’ll also find some of the best Windows apps.

Microsoft Store does have its own collection of themes, generally a set of themed pictures that you can use as a rotating wallpaper theme (also handy for creating a custom theme in Windows 11). They may have been made for Windows 10 but are entirely compatible with Windows 11 and allow you to pick your favorite background subjects. This Animals in Autumn set is one of our favorites to celebrate the season — even if it isn’t fall — with appropriate imagery, from elk and chipmunks to happy doggos playing in the leaves.

It’s a free theme that comes with a variety of images of exploding color pigments. These images are wonderfully bright and vivid, but will still fit right in with your desktop’s usual icons, so as not to be too distracting. We recommend using this theme with Windows 11’s dark mode feature. You’ll find this one in the Microsoft Store app too.

Latest Windows 11 update slows Intel’s newest desktop processors
Windows 11 logo on a laptop.

Microsoft's latest Windows 11 24H2 (KB5050094 and KB5051987) updates are causing some serious performance issues, especially for Intel Core Ultra 9 285K users, as Neowin reports. The updates interfere with CPU speeds when a user minimizes a program or the app is out of focus. However, older Intel processors remain unaffected.

It's reported that apps are "massively throttled," causing the CPU's clock rate to drop significantly and deteriorating overall performance. Some users have resorted to using beta BIOS or changing power settings to preserve CPU performance during background processes. The Intel Core Ultra 9 285K slowdown is causing some major headaches as the issues occur across various apps, including Prime95 and 7Zip. This suggests that the 24H2 performance issues are not limited to one app but are linked to KB 5050094 and KB5051987 updates.

I’ve been waiting for this possible Windows 11 transfer tool
Windows 11 on several devices.

A new transfer app for Windows 11 may be in the works, as Dongle and Microsoft watcher Phantomofearth discovered it in a preview build, as Windows Latest reports. If released, the transfer app could offer options like "Back up to this PC" and "Transfer files to a new PC," streaming the migration process without needing an external storage device or cloud services.

Once you've made your selection, the process continues. The app could ask you to connect your old PC to the same Wi-Fi network, highlighting that it'll use wireless transfer mode. If you've used Nearby Sharing, the transfer app's process will feel familiar since it might be used to make the transfer process possible. The app could ask you to pair the two PCs to begin the transfer. The app should start the transfer session on the new PC and recommend connecting to a power source since the process could take a while. However, the app could not show the available controls or the set of files it'll copy.
