These early RTX 4080 Super listings confirmed my worries about the GPU

I was worried this was going to happen. The first listings for Nvidia’s upcoming RTX 4070 Ti Super and RTX 4080 Super suggest that prices for these high-end cards will be much higher than we expected.

Zotac listed about half a dozen models prematurely on Amazon. The listings have been taken down, but VideoCardz was able to capture a couple of screenshots showing the prices of the upcoming GPUs. They show a Zotac AMP Extreme RTX 4080 Super at $1,400, as well as an a Trinity Black RTX 4070 Ti Super at $900. The list prices of these GPUs is $1,000 and $800, respectively.

VideoCardz spotted six listings in total, with three RTX 4070 Ti Super models ranging from $900 to $970 and three RTX 4080 Super models ranging from $1,300 to $1,400. Although we expect to see overclocked models at a slight premium, the listing include versions of these GPUs that are supposed to be at list price.

Unlike with the recent RTX 4070 Super, Nvidia says it’s replacing the base RTX 4070 Ti and RTX 4080 with the upcoming Super versions. In the case of the RTX 4080 Super, Nvidia is slashing the price from $1,200 down to $1,000. Despite that, the few remaining models of the base RTX 4080 left in stock are still selling for $1,200, suggesting that Nvidia’s recommended price for the RTX 4080 Super may not hold for long.

These listings certainly suggest that’s the case, but don’t freak out just yet. Listings for the cards at Best Buy show models available at list price. On top of that, the fact that prices were removed from the listings on Amazon suggest they could have been wrong. Even if prices at release are higher than expected, they shouldn’t stay that way for long.

The only exception is the RTX 4080 Super. Given that the price of the base model has held steady at $1,200, I suspect that prices on the RTX 4080 Super will go above what Nvidia recommends. Hopefully, prices will eventually even out to a place where you can buy one of the new GPUs at this price. That’s what we’ve seen with the RTX 4070 Super, which is available at list price even after launching with rave reviews.

We won’t have to wait long to see how everything shakes out. The RTX 4070 Ti Super is set to launch in a few days, on January 24, while the RTX 4080 Super is coming next week on January 31.

Reviewers hated this AMD GPU. Here’s why I still recommend it
AMD RX 7800 XT and RX 7700 XT graphics cards.

It's rare that reviewers universally hate a graphics card, but most wouldn't put AMD's RX 7700 XT among the best graphics cards you can buy. As you can read in my own combo review of the RX 7800 XT and RX 7700 XT, the latter GPU just didn't make sense when it launched more than a year ago. Time has marched on, however, and the RX 7700 XT doesn't get the respect it deserves today.

You probably have a negative assumption about this graphics card, and I wouldn't blame you. Tom's Hardware said the GPU got stuck "between a proverbial rock and hard place," while TechSpot was even more harsh: "Purchasing the Radeon 7700 XT at $450 is ill-advised when the 7800 XT is available, leaving us questioning AMD's rationale behind this launch." User reactions were harsher still.

Intel’s new $249 GPU brings 1440p gaming to the masses
An exploded view of Intel's Arc A580 GPU.

Intel is trying to redefine what a "budget GPU" really means in 2024, and it's doing so with the new Arc B580 GPU. In what Intel itself described as its "worst kept secret," the B580 is the debut graphics card in Intel's new Battlemage range of discrete GPUs, and it's arriving at just $249. That's a price point that's been relegated to 1080p for decades, but Intel says the B580 will change that dynamic.

It's a 1440p GPU, at least by Intel's definition. That's despite the fact that Intel is comparing the card to GPUs like the RTX 4060 and RX 7600, both of which are more expensive than the B580 and squarely target 1080p. Intel says it can deliver higher performance than these two GPUs while undercutting the price, all in an attempt to capitalize on 1440p gamers. "1440p is becoming 1080p," as Intel's Tom Petersen put it in a pre-briefing with the press.

You can now buy eight RTX 5090s for over $50,000
Comino Grando server.

It's true that we're all waiting for the release of Nvidia's best graphics cards, but ... not like this. The RTX 5090 made a surprise appearance in a GPU server made by Comino, a company that deals with data center design and construction. Although still unannounced by Nvidia, the GPU can now be preordered directly from the manufacturer, but not by itself -- and at a whopping price of around $5,000 per GPU.

Just to clarify: No, Nvidia's RTX 50-series is still not here, and as of yet, Nvidia hasn't even confirmed that there will be an RTX 5090 at all. However, Comino opened up preorders for its next-gen Grando Server equipped with either six or eight RTX 5090 GPUs. This is worrying news for gamers because the RTX 5090 was always meant to be a consumer card. Still, the reality is that the RTX 4090 remained in high demand throughout its tenure because of its AI capabilities, and the RTX 5090 is only going to be even better in that regard.
