The viral ‘GPU purse’ costs $1,024 — but you can make your own for $40

I never thought the best graphics cards would become a fashion statement, much less some of the worst, but here we are. Over the weekend, a website called GPU Purse went live with a listing for a discarded Nvidia GT 730 GPU — a $20 used GPU — that had been turned into a handbag. You’ll just need to shell out $1,024 for the bag, which, according to the product page, fits a phone and comes complete with a long or short chain.

One look at the website sets off alarm bells, especially for a product that’s over $1,000, but it appears there’s some legitimacy behind it. Financial Times reports that the GPU Purse is the brainchild of Tessa Barton, a New York Times alum and current pretraining engineer at Databricks. Barton reportedly set up a Shopify store in haste after a post on X (formerly Twitter) went viral last week with over 1.4 million impressions.

The GPU purse might be real, and it might be something that will actually show up at your doorstep if you’re brave enough to place an order. It’s just a complete rip-off. Barton explained to FT that the arbitrary price is two raised to the 10th power — apparently due to the fact that exponents of two are important for neural networks. The shop also lists a purse made with Nvidia’s H100, which comes in at $65,536 — or two raised to the 16th power. That listing currently doesn’t have any photos.

Maybe you could frame the bag as some sort of limited-edition collector’s item — in the Shopify listing, Barton says they are a “limited edition. I am making like 10 more in the next few weeks.” The bag is still in stock, for what it’s worth, so it doesn’t seem like Barton has reached “like 10 more” orders quite yet.

Silly as it may seem for the price, apparently there’s a market for this type of, as Barton calls it, “blazingly fast fashion.” At expensive Silicon Valley parties, especially since the AI boom and Nvidia’s massive rise in stock price, Barton says you will be looked down upon if you wear a high fashion brand. “If you wear the GPU bag, you will be approached … I don’t know how to explain how many men will talk to you,” Barton said in an interview with the Financial Times.

Maybe if you frequent these types of parties and have a little Nvidia stock to blow, the GPU purse makes sense. For everyone else, you can build your own with a $20 GT 730 and a , which looks shockingly similar to what Barton currently has listed for sale.

Nvidia may keep producing one RTX 40 GPU, and it’s not the one we want
The Alienware m16 R2 on a white desk.

The last few weeks brought us a slew of rumors about Nvidia potentially sunsetting most of the RTX 40-series graphics cards. However, a new update reveals that one GPU might remain in production long after other GPUs are no longer being produced. Unfortunately, it's a GPU that would struggle to rank among Nvidia's best graphics cards. I'm talking about the RTX 4050 -- a card that only appears in laptops.

The scoop comes from a leaker on Weibo and was first spotted by Wccftech. The leaker states that the RTX 4050 is "the only 40-series laptop GPU that Nvidia will continue to supply" after the highly anticipated launch of the RTX 50-series. Unsurprisingly, the tipster also reveals that the fact that both the RTX 4050 and the RTX 5050 will be readily available at the same time will also impact the pricing of the next-gen card.

This may be your last chance to buy an RTX 40-series GPU at MSRP
Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 GPU.

Just last week, we reported on the end of production for the RTX 40-series. Now, new information from Board Channels (shared by Gazlog) suggests that the final shipments of Nvidia's best graphics cards are right around the corner. Some GPUs, like the RTX 4090, have already seen their final shipments. With the holidays on the horizon, now might be the last time to buy the RTX 40-series at a decent price before stock levels begin dwindling.

Despite being two years old, Nvidia's RTX 40-series has held up in terms of GPU prices. Only the RTX 4090 went up from its original recommended list price (MSRP), with the rest of the lineup  holding steady and mostly hovering around the launch price. Things might take a turn for the worse, though, if this report ends up being true.

Out with the old, in with the new. According to Board Channels, Nvidia has now halted production for nearly all of its best graphics cards as it shifts focus to the RTX 50-series. Only one GPU remains in production, and some of the cards that are the most in demand are no longer being produced.

Nvidia hasn't officially announced that it's sunsetting the RTX 40-series, but we've been hearing more and more reports that imply that might be the case. The RTX 4090 was among the first cards to go out of production, and the discontinuation appears to have immediately affected the markets. Nvidia's behemoth flagship was hard to come by at the best of times, and now, as no more new units are being produced, it's safe to assume that this situation won't improve. The cheapest RTX 4090 I could find on Amazon costs nearly $2,000, but you can still snag one for .
