MSI Claw’s latest update is exactly what users have been asking for

Black Myth: Wukong running on the MSI Claw 8 AI+.

MSI Claw had a rocky start, but the latest MSI Claw AI 8+ ranks among the best gaming handhelds. No matter the exact console, MSI seems committed to listening to user feedback, because today’s update comes with some of the features gamers have been asking for. Let’s dig in.

MSI announced the latest update in a post on X (Twitter), saying: “We’re bringing these new MSI Center M features based on community feedback.” Looking at what’s being added, I can easily believe that this was based on requests, and in fact, one of those things is something I want in pretty much every single piece of software — the ability to choose between light and dark mode.

Color mode is exactly what it says on the label — you can now choose the design that suits you best. Personally, I’m always using dark mode on every device that allows it, but I have to say that the light mode looks pretty neat, too. It doesn’t appear to be overly bright, which helps when gaming at night, but try it out for yourself and report back.

The other updates are all related to battery life. MSI is bringing Battery Master to help you choose a charging limit, which can help protect battery health. The same way you’ll sometimes hear that you shouldn’t charge a phone to a full 100% in order to keep the battery healthy, MSI is now letting you do the same thing with your Claw.

Lastly, Battery Calibration. This is a separate tool that MSI recommends that you use once every 3 months to further improve battery life. You should only use it when the handheld is plugged in, though, and using it will close all your apps, so don’t tab out of a game to do this — you’ll lose your progress.

MSI also says that some bug fixes have been implemented alongside these updates, although it doesn’t specify what exactly has been fixed.

The update is rolling out now, so if you own an MSI Claw, you can download the patch and check out these new features for yourself.

Why MSI’s leaked gaming handheld might crush its competitors
The MSI Claw gaming handheld over a colorful background.

That didn't take long. Less than 24 hours after the initial mysterious teaser, MSI's first gaming handheld got leaked in its entirety ahead of its official launch during CES 2024. The handheld, which is set to compete against the likes of the Steam Deck and the Asus ROG Ally, is going to differ from many of its rivals. And it all comes down to the Intel Meteor Lake chip found inside.

Images of the new handheld appeared alongside Geekbench benchmarks earlier today. Dubbed MSI Claw, the portable gaming PC houses the Core Ultra 7 155H chip that comes with a total of 16 cores and 22 threads. That's a major boost over the AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme found in handhelds like the Lenovo Legion Go and the Asus ROG Ally. In Intel's case, the cores are split due to the hybrid architecture of the chip, so we're really getting six performance cores, eight efficient cores, and two new low-power cores.

MSI’s next laptop could have a mind-blowingly good display
MSI GT77 Titan with the Digital Trends website up sitting on a table.

When we reviewed MSI’s GT77 laptop earlier this year, we criticized its “lackluster” 1080p display. Well, that’s not going to be a problem anymore, because MSI is set to update the GT77 to come with a stonking 17.3-inch 4K screen with both a 144Hz refresh rate and mini-LED backlighting, according to NotebookCheck. That could make it the first laptop to offer that refresh rate alongside both a 4K resolution and mini-LED tech.

NotebookCheck cites “industry sources” to claim that the new version of the GT77 could make a splash at CES 2023 in January. While the outlet says it did not see any photos of the device, it has published what it claims is the official spec sheet of the new panel, which can be seen below.
