University Displays New Supercomputer

University Displays New SupercomputerA number of companies, including IBM, have been working together on a new supercomputer that was rolled out by BristolUniversity in England. Capable of 37 trillion calculations each second, Blue Crystal – as it’s known – will be used to help with research on aerospace engineering, climatechange and drug design.   With a $14 million price tag it’s unlikely to be affordable to run those games really fast in your living room, however.   "Serious research in manydisciplines can no longer be undertaken without high performance computing, and the University has recognized this through its investment in BlueCrystal," according to the director of Bristol’sadvanced computing research centre, Dr. Ian Stewart. "HPC-based research contributes significantly to University research income and will play an increasingly important role in teaching."

New Mac Studio release date, price and everything you need to know
Apple Mac Studio with M4 Max and M3 Ultra chips and two Apple Studio Display monitors.

The Apple Mac Studio has always packed a ton of power into a very diminutive block of what feels a lot like solid aluminum. It's designed to look like it's floating in air, and the majority of its ports are in the back and out of the way. There's simply no other desktop machine that takes up so little space and, frankly, looks so great on your desk.

The new model maintains all the best characteristics that makes it one of the best desktops while dramatically increasing the power. The previous generation hadn't yet received the faster GPU and Neural Engine performance, and that's now on tap. It's more expensive than ever, but if you need it, then it looks like it will deliver.
Release date and price
The new Mac Studio was announced on March 5, 2025, and will be available starting on March 12, 2025. That's earlier than many predictions, and very soon after its announcement.

Apple’s new Mac Studio breaks records in more ways than one
2025 Mac Studio

Apple has announced a new Mac Studio to add to the company’s range of high-end Macs. In a surprising twist, the new Mac Studio will come in two flavors, one containing the M4 Max and one containing a previously unreleased chip: The M3 Ultra. It's safe to say that this Mac Studio will break several records, all thanks to the staggering amounts of unified memory and storage that it's equipped with -- but also largely thanks to the eye-watering price.

The M3 Ultra is a new addition to the lineup. Apple says that it's built for AI and promises to deliver up to 2.5x the performance of the M1 Ultra, although there's no mention of how much faster it'll be than the M2 Ultra. M3 Ultra, and thus the Mac Studio, will offer support for up to 512GB of unified memory, which, as Apple says, is "the most ever in a personal computer."

Apple may soon release a new Mac Studio along with the new MacBook Airs, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman on X. This could set it apart from the Mac Pro, which is expected to skip M3 Ultra and jump straight to M4 Ultra.

Gurman stated, “It’s not an ‘Air’ — but the new Mac Studio, codenamed J575, appears to be imminent. It could be announced as early as this week along with the new MacBook Airs. There are signs these will come with an M4 Max but that its new Ultra chip will actually be an M3 Ultra.”
