3 you PS Plus games that you need to check out this weekend (December 13-15)

December classics catalog additions for PS Plus.
Sony Interactive Entertainment

As we wait for the last big batch of PlayStation Plus Premium and Extra titles of 2024, there are still plenty of solid games that you can check out. An RPG available as part of the month’s PS Plus Essential lineup is worth checking out for fans of Pokémon, while two PS2 classics are worth the time of Premium subscribers. If you’re wondering what you should play this weekend, any of these games are good options to play.

Earlier in December, Sony added some classic PS2 games to the PS Plus Premium game catalog to celebrate PlayStation’s 30th anniversary. One of those games was Sly 2: Band of Thieves from Sucker Punch Productions. While the first and third games in this series are also now available with PS Plus Premium, Sly 2 is my favorite game in the series. It’s this game where Sucker Punch’s stealth platformer series came into its own with memorable, well-designed characters, a story that’s engaging, and 3D platforming gameplay that’s among the best of its console generation. If you’ve never played any Sly Cooper games before, the franchise is worth checking out now that it’s on PS5.

Temtem

Temtem - Teaser Trailer

Before Palworld, there was Temtem. While no game has been able to dethrone Pokémon, Temtem presented one of the most original-feeling alternatives to Game Freak’s classic RPG series. While it still features turn-based creature battles where the elemental types of the creatures and attacks used are important, Temtem emphasizes multiplayer more than any mainline Pokemon game ever has. As 2024 has gone by without any new Pokémon game, Temtem is worth a download for fans of the series itching for something new to play.

The PS5 version of Temtem will be available to redeem for PS Plus subscribers of all tiers until January 6, 2025.

When Sony brought those last two Sly Cooper games to PS Plus Premium earlier this month, it also released a refurbished version of Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy’s PS4 and PS5 port. This is similar to the treatment other PS2 games like Siren recently received, adding more quality-of-life features as the PS2 classic was brought forward to a new emulator. If you’ve never played Jak and Daxter before, know that this is the series that Naughty Dog worked on between Crash Bandicoot and Uncharted. It’s fascinating to revisit it in 2024 as we wait for what Sony’s premier game development studio is doing next.

Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy is available now for PS4 and PS5 as part of the PS Plus Premium classics catalog.

3 new PS Plus games that you should play this weekend (December 27-29)
Key art for Star Wars: Tales from Galaxy's Edge - Enhanced Edition.

Did you just get a PlayStation 5, PS5 Pro, or PlayStation VR2 for Christmas? If so, you've come to the right place. One of the best things you can do is buy a PlayStation Plus Premium or Extra subscription, as that will give you access to a large catalog of games from every PlayStation platform to check out on your new hardware. As for more specific recommendations, this week I want to highlight some of the hidden gems that were part of December's addition to PS Plus. That includes a Star Wars game that's one of the best PSVR2 titles, an eerie Alien game that you only have another week or so to claim, and an underrated 2023 indie.

One standout launch title for PSVR2 was Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy's Edge -- Enhanced Edition. This is a VR game that does a fantastic job of whisking players away and immersing them in various parts of the Star Wars world as a Jedi, bounty hunter, and more. That includes a digital version of Batuu, the planet that Galaxy's Edge at Disneyland and Disney World is based on. It's still one of the best games you can play on PSVR2 and worth checking out for any Star Wars fan. In general, PS Plus Premium's VR game catalog is worth it for anyone who owns Sony's headset. Tales from the Galaxy's Edge is simply the latest cherry on top.

3 new PS Plus games that you should play this weekend (December 20-22)
Frey in Square Enix's Forspoken.

The latest batch of new PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium game catalog additions was released this week. As a result, PS Plus subscribers have a ton of new options when it comes to what to play as we approach what is many people's holiday break. Games from this most recent batch are what I'm recommending people check out this weekend. One of the titles is technically a Christmas game, so it's fitting to play this time of year, while my other recommendations are good options if you're looking for something to play with others.
Forspoken
Forspoken - Official Launch Trailer

Square Enix's Forspoken is a high-profile action RPG console exclusive that was released on PlayStation 5 in 2023. While its quip-heavy dialogue definitely isn't for everyone, the way it incorporates the player's magical abilities into combat and traversal is truly exhilarating. Dashing through large fields, surfing on top of water, and launching bullet-like streams of rocks at enemies is immensely satisfying. Forspoken's Isekai adventure technically begins with the main character, Frey, being whisked away from New York City around Christmas. That technically makes this a Christmas game, giving you all the more reason to check it out this weekend.

3 games leaving Xbox Game Pass you should play this weekend (December 20-22)
A custom car built drives around Lego 2K Drive.

No more new games are coming to Xbox Game Pass for the rest of 2024. In fact, the service is going to lose some games at the end of the month. All of the games leaving the service on December 31 are very entertaining, and the lineup encompasses wacky racing games, hardcore strategy games about the history of humanity, and goofy fighting games where players control cute animals. These games are worth checking out this weekend as they're leaving Microsoft's gaming subscription service very soon.

LEGO 2K Drive | Awesome Reveal Trailer | Coming May 19

Racing games are some of the most approachable ones out there, so it makes sense that the genre would be a perfect fit for a Lego game. Visual Concepts and 2K went a step further than they had to with Lego 2K Drive, though, adding large open areas full of missions and minigames to experience. Lego 2K Drive is a light and breezy arcade-like racer that doesn't ask too much from players unless they want to spend a lot of time building vehicles piece by piece. After this game leaves the service at the end of the month, Forza Horizon 5 will be your only option when it comes to open-world racing games on Xbox Game Pass.
