Throughout the entertainment industry, classic stories are often adapted for various mediums. Books, movies, and video games are always borrowing from one another. One adaptation that few saw coming concerns George Orwell’s classic social satire Animal Farm, which is being developed as an indie game with approval and help from the author’s estate.

Players join the story as one of the animals on Manor Farm just before the revolution. Throughout the adventure-tycoon style game, players make their way through the hardships and successes of Animalism. Similar in fashion to Telltale’s games, the gameplay will combine story choices and farm operations into the main narrative. This gives players the opportunity to experience the full weight of their decisions.

George Orwell’s Animal Farm, first published in 1945, was seen as a thinly veiled critique of Soviet Russia, as well as an allegory of absolute power and totalitarian authority. Through satire and genuine warning, Animal Farm has been seen as timeless and universally significant. Orwell poses many questions to the reader about power, corruption, and the misuse of language.

Among the development team are Imre Jele (founder of Bossa Studios), Andy Payne (founder of Just Flight and AppyNation), Georg Backer (A Brave Plan, Fable series), Jessica Curry (Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture, Dear Esther), Kate Saxon (Alien: Isolation, Witcher 3) and more. Members of this creative team are coming together only to work on Animal Farm, and will return to other games when it is finished.

“Over the last decade, some governments started using language eerily similar to what I heard growing up under a communist regime,” says Jele. “So I can’t help feeling personally challenged to spread Orwell’s dystopian warning by adapting Animal Farm into a game.”

The indie game, which is still early in development, has been fully authorized by the Orwell estate. According to Jele’s statement to Polygon, the Orwell estate has “scrutinized our goals and ideas extensively during this process, as they should.”

Animal Farm is currently being developed for PC and “other platforms.” Other details, such as a release date, are still under wraps and will be announced later via the game’s website.

Don’t miss out on these great games from early 2022
Nobody Saves the World all forms

The first quarter of 2022 was packed with fantastic games. Elden Ring will likely go down as one of the best games ever made, and excellent titles like Kirby and the Forgotten Land, Sifu, and Horizon Forbidden West will give players dozens, if not hundreds of hours of entertainment. Those games will eventually end, and April and May 2022 are looking fairly light in terms of compelling releases.
We've rounded up several amazing indie and AA games that players might have missed during the first three crowded months of 2022. Those looking for something new to play before game announcements and launches pick up again in June can't go wrong with any of these six titles.
Nobody Saves the World
Nobody Saves the World - Launch Trailer
Nobody Saves the World seems like a relatively standard Zelda-like adventure game on its surface, but in actuality, it's a hilarious masterclass in engaging game progression. Players can change their wimpy main character into seventeen different forms, including a horse, rat, and more. Each form has unique abilities and skills, which can be mixed and matched with other forms to create countless loadouts.
To level up, players must clear dungeons and complete form-specific challenges. There's always a dungeon to clear, a challenge to complete, or an ability combination to try in Nobody Saves the World, so it never gets old. On top of all of that, it features an amazing soundtrack and legitimately funny writing.
Nobody Saves the World is included with Xbox Games Pass, but there's no need to worry if you don't have an Xbox or PC. Nobody Saves the World will be released for PS4, PS5, and Nintendo Switch on April 15, so you'll be able to play it anywhere very soon.
OlliOlli World

Like Nobody Saves the World, Olli Olli World is quietly one of the best games of the year. OlliOlli World is an easy-to-pick-up 2D side-scrolling skateboarding game that features intricately designed levels and a lot of gameplay depth for those looking for it.
"OlliOlli World is more than just a skateboarding game -- it's one of the best 2D platformers since Celeste," I wrote in a four-and-a-half star review. "Like the best games of the genre, it knows that easy-to-learn-but-hard-to-master mechanics, rewarding obstacles, and high speeds that test one's reaction time are the hallmarks of a great platformer."
Horizon Forbidden West, Sifu, and Elden Ring all came out around the time this game was released, so it didn't get much attention despite being published by Private Division, a prominent AA publisher. Still, this skateboarding game is secretly one of the best games of the year, so make sure you don't miss out on it. OlliOlli World is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch, so there's no reason you need to miss out on it.

PlayStation showed off 7 radical indie games today
Quill approaches a giant tree with a marking on it in Moss: Book II.

On February 10, PlayStation highlighted seven new indie games in the works for PS4, PS5, and PlayStation VR. While none of the announcements were on the level of yesterday's Nintendo Direct, quite a few unique games still got their time in the spotlight. These are the seven intriguing indie games that PlayStation highlighted.
Moss: Book II

The first game PlayStation showed was the sequel to Moss, one of the best VR games out there. It got a PlayStation Blog post mainly focused on world design. Polyarc explained how rooms are much bigger and interconnected in Moss: Book II, so players will have a chance to revisit areas they like and see them from different angles. Moss: Book II will be released this Spring, so it doesn't look like it will be available on the PlayStation VR2.

Just one person made this minimalist pixel-art platformer, and they plan to incorporate survival horror elements and mind-bending puzzles and secrets into the game. Animal Well will be released for PS5 sometime in late 2022 or early 2023.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge - Splinter Reveal Trailer | PS4
The highlight of today's wave of indie game announcements was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge. A new trailer for the game was released and confirmed that Master Splinter is playable. This is the first time he's been playable in a TMNT game, and his move set is packed with plenty of references to the show. A gameplay video with commentary that lasts nearly nine minutes was also uploaded and gave us our first good uncut look at how Shredder's Revenge will play. For fans of classic beat 'em up, specifically, the TMNT ones, Shredder's Revenge looks like it will be a blast from the past. It launches later this year.
Post Void
Post Void - Announcement Trailer | PS4
Post Void takes the prize for the weirdest announcement. The previously released PC game is like a mix between Cruelty Squad and Doom. It's a roguelike with psychedelic visuals where players will have to move fast or die. It will be released for PS4 and PS5 this spring.
Salt and Sacrifice
Salt and Sacrifice - Release Date Announce Trailer | PS5, PS4
Salt and Sacrifice is a sequel to Salt and Sanctuary, a Dark Souls-inspired sidescrolling action game and one of the most notable PlayStation indie games. In a new trailer and PlayStation Blog post, the developers highlighted the PvP element of Salt and Sacrifice and confirmed that it will be released for PS4 and PS5 on May 10.
Samurai Gunn 2
Samurai Gunn 2 - Announcement Trailer | PS5
Samurai Gunn 2 is a fighting game where characters die in just one hit. With a new trailer and PlayStation Blog post, its developers confirmed that the game would come to PS5 and feature crossover characters and stages from popular indie games like Among Us, Spelunky 2, and Minit.
Hello Neighbor 2
Hello Neighbor 2 - Pre-Order Trailer | PS5, PS4

Cozy video games are the cure for our hectic modern times
A mail truck drives through a forest in Lake.

Games that ditch high-octane action for more laid-back gameplay have come to be collectively known as wholesome or cozy games in recent years. Spurred on by well-known titles including Animal Crossing, Stardew Valley, and Harvest Moon, cozy games especially became a point of focus during a hectic 2020.

Cozy games had been on my radar for literal years, from playing Animal Crossing on GameCube back in the early 2000s to building an endless number of small towns in Townscaper in 2020. But it wasn’t until the pandemic that I became much more interested in these particular kinds of games that are often more contained (in an extremely pleasant way) than high-level AAA titles tend to be with their expansive open worlds and storylines.
