Attention U.S. Military Personnel: Win a copy of Modern Warfare 3!

Although the holiday season is a shaping up to be a good one here in the States (if the Black Friday sales are any indication), there are servicemen and women all over the world that will be away from their loved ones while they are off serving. This contest is for you.

We talked to Activision the other day and told them we wanted to do something for the American military men and women stationed both here and abroad, as well as the veterans that are stateside. Doing something for active duty soldiers and veterans is something that is close to the heart of the publisher–Activision formed an organization designed to help returning veterans find work called the Call of Duty Endowment— and it responded in kind, sending us four copies of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 to giveaway—two for the PS3, and two for the Xbox 360.

In order to win, it couldn’t be simpler: just post your branch, where you are serving or served, and what system you would prefer a copy on, and you will automatically be entered to win. If you are entering for a loved one serving, that is perfectly fine, just enter their branch, what region they are or were in, and the preferred system.

This contest is open to both active duty men and women, as well as veterans. Please do not post personal information, we will collect the relevant info from the winners.

Once we have chosen the four winners, we will contact them via email and ask for a proof of service (a scan of a military ID would be perfect, for example), then we will send your game out.

While this contest is open for anyone in the world, due to regional encoding the games will only work on a North American encoded (NTSC U/C) console, so please keep that in mind.

The contest will end this Friday at 3pm PST. We will do everything in our power to get the game to you or your loved one by Christmas wherever they may be, but we cannot guarantee it. We will at least be able to confirm that it is en route.

These Activision Blizzard games need to come to Xbox Game Pass this year
Sekiro easy mode mod FromSoftware Souls games gameplay difficulty

In October 2023, Microsoft completed its acquisition of Activision Blizzard, and by the end of the year, the latter company's CEO had departed. Now, this will be the year where we’ll see how Activision Blizzard functions when fully integrated into Microsoft. The most immediate change for those who play games will likely be Activision Blizzard titles coming to Xbox Game Pass, Microsoft’s subscription service.

Microsoft and Activision have explained that because of the tribulations the acquisition encountered, it was impossible to have Xbox Game Pass additions prepared almost immediately after the acquisition, as it did with ZeniMax Media. In the coming months, I expect we’ll finally start to see Activision Blizzard games trickle onto the service, even if we shouldn't expect it from this week's Developer_Direct. As Activision Blizzard is one of the oldest game publishers out there, having released hundreds of games, there are plenty of titles to choose from. I’ve cherry-picked the ones I want to see most.

2023 set an incredibly high bar for video game sequels
A screenshot from The Story So Far in Marvel's Spider-Man 2.

It's not an overstatements to say that 2023 was one of the best years for video game sequels ever.

Simply looking at The Game Awards 2023’s Game of the Year nominations, all of which are titles from preexisting series, proves that. It’s not just that we received a lot of new video game sequels in 2023; that happens every year. No, what makes the game sequels of 2023 stand out is how many of them impressively build upon what came before. From Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 to Baldur’s Gate 3, these follow-ups all looked at their predecessor, identified the weaker aspects, and directly addressed those issues.
