Aloy holds a bow in Lego Horizon Adventures.

You can’t talk about the best Switch games without at least one Lego game coming up. These games have adapted all of the major franchises, from superheroes to fantasy characters, into some of the most enjoyable games for kids and adults. Or, better yet, play them together since nearly all of them are best played in local multiplayer. At this point in the Switch’s lifecycle, there are over a dozen Lego games out there to pick from. While you could always go with whichever one is based on your favorite franchise, there are a few others not based on a license that are just as good. These are our picks for the best Lego games on the Switch that mix in both license properties and original IPs.

If you do plan on playing these with a friend or family member, make sure you have a spare controller ready.

No one was expecting Lego and Horizon to crossover, but now that they have, it makes so much sense. Transforming all those cool robot dinosaurs into Lego figures just works perfectly, as does the translation of the first game’s plot into a more breezy, kid-friendly adventure. Lego Horizon Adventures is a shorter Lego game than most, but still full of charm and fun — especially in co-op. The combat is satisfying, the story moments funny, and plenty of collectibles and things to upgrade and unlock. None of the puzzles are too difficult, which might be disappointing for older gamers but does make it a great way for kids to get into both Lego and Horizon.

Forget about Grand Theft Auto — if you’re looking for some open-world fun, Lego City Undercover is hard to beat. While it lacks the mature story of GTA 5 — and much of the violence — this family-friendly game still manages to keep things entertaining with a sprawling open-world packed full of vehicles, collectibles, and clumsy car thieves. Unlike most Lego games, City Undercover only allows two players to join in on the action. However, it makes up for that low player count with some of the most frantic action you’ll ever see in a Lego video game. It also comes with a healthy dose of typical Lego humor — including quirky movie references and off-the-wall character names such as Chase McCain and Rex Fury.

Unlike any of the other Lego games we’ve featured, Lego Builder’s Journey isn’t an action-adventure title but a puzzle game. You will interact with small, incredibly realistic Lego environments with a goal of creating a path for your little character. The game features an incredibly calming soundtrack, and many of the puzzles allow you to take them at your own pace. Each new chapter features a new mechanic or trick to learn so you’re always challenged to think critically about how best to use the pieces available to reach the end. While the story mode can be beaten fairly quickly, there’s also the creative mode that lets you build your own custom sets.

There are a lot of Marvel-themed Lego games out there, but we still think that Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 is the best of the bunch. The plot is a continuation of the first entry, but not to the point where you couldn’t start with this game if you wanted. The basic setup is that you will bring all your favorite heroes together from across space and time to defeat the evil Kang. It plays like all the other Lego games of this type — plenty of light action, collecting things, and puzzles — but with the unique abilities of tons of superheroes. This entry also adds in a four-player competitive Super Hero battle mode for even more action.

Star Wars was one of the first movies to get the Lego treatment and really took the entire Lego genre to new heights. After almost every film was adapted in individual games or bespoke bundles, The Skywalker Saga finally lets you live through all nine of the core films in one package. You are free to choose which trilogy you begin with, and they all have been revamped with slicker gameplay and detailed hub worlds to explore. This is probably the biggest Lego game we’ll ever get, with 45 core levels to complete. If you plan on completing all the objectives and collecting every hidden brick, prepare for quite the adventure.

It’ll be up to you and a friend to figure out what this group is up to and become the greatest super-villains the Earth has ever seen.

Follow the story of Harry Potter as he tries to stop Lord Voldemort from taking over the Wizarding World. The Lego Harry Potter Collection encompasses the entirety of Years 1-7 — all remastered to provide incredible graphics on Nintendo Switch. It might be a bit rough around the edges, but there aren’t many other games out there that give you this much Potter content in one place. Learn new spells, craft powerful potions, and endure tedious potion classes as Harry, Ron, and Hermione work their way through Hogwarts — while also trying to stop the most powerful wizard in history. Best of all, the game lets you take a companion along for the ride with two-player co-op.

Released in 2017, The Lego Ninjago Movie Video Game is starting to show its age — but it’s still one of the best Ninjago games on the market. If you can look past its terribly uncreative name, there’s a lot to love about this Lego adaptation. Up to four players can join in on co-op missions, battling against Lord Garmadon and his evil Shark Army. Wall-running and high-jumping make this one of the most fast-paced Lego games on the market and — with eight unique locations to explore — there’s more than enough content to keep you busy.

The best open-world games on Switch
Link flying through air in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

Even when the system launched, the Nintendo Switch was clearly the weakest console of the generation. While the best PS5 games and best Xbox Series X games were pushing graphics to the limit, Nintendo was more focused on delivering fun experiences you could play on your TV or in handheld mode. Despite its lack of raw power, which the Switch 2 addresses to some degree, it hasn't stopped the system from delivering amazing open-world games with vast landscapes to explore. Sure, they may not have the best graphics, but the simple fact that such massive experiences are playable on the Switch makes them technical marvels. These aren't watered-down experiences where it counts, which is the fun factor, so let's list off the best open-world games for the Switch you should be playing.

You can't technically preorder the Switch 2 quite yet, but we can show you how to be the first to know when you can.
