Bethesda has a lot of new games in the works, many of them big AAA titles and a couple that are said to be bigger than anything it has worked on before. It may have one more unannounced game in the works, too, though the Bethesda employee who broke that story has now retracted it, so the existence of this game remains uncertain.

Considering Bethesda’s planned release schedule for the last few months of 2017, it seems like the publishing giant is gunning hard for a packed holiday season. Along with Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus, The Evil Within 2, Dishonored: Death of the Outsider, Quake champions and VR ports of Doom, Fallout 4, and Skyrim, it may have yet another unannounced game as well.

Or not. Originally teased by Bethesda’s VP of marketing, Pete Hines during a chat about the Bethesda Creation Club, he said “we even have a game coming out this year that we haven’t even told anyone about.” He wouldn’t be pressed on details, refusing to comment on what sort of game it was or whether it was a new IP or not (nice try TekSyndicate).

However, he’s now retracted that statement. In a follow-up tweet, Hines said that he “had a concussion from the beating [he] took online and was rambling.” He then prompted readers to ignore what he had said.

I probably just had a concussion from the beating I took online and was rambling. Ignore.

Although the original story of a new Bethesda game in the works was surprising considering the already stacked lineup of games coming out of the company, it’s just as surprising that a VP of marketing would make such a mistake. It is certainly possible Hines was frazzled at the time of the interview considering the lambasting Bethesda has received for the Creation Club, but it’s just as likely that he slipped up and revealed something (no matter how vaguely) that he shouldn’t have.

Despite Hines’ follow-up tweet, many Bethesda fans have been speculating about what the unannounced game might be. It’s unlikely to be any of the big games that have previously been detailed, considering Hines’ statement that Bethesda hasn’t told us anything about it. IGN guessed that it could be the new mobile game that was teased earlier this year.

The cast of Borderlands.

Video game adaptations are on a hot streak. Films like The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 were massive box office hits, while series like The Last Of Us and Halo have made for stellar TV shows.

While there have been some great video game movies, some have failed to capture the true spirit of a game on film. Luckily, more effort and resources are being poured into new adaptations given the success of the projects mentioned above — we're starting to see more and more video game films in the works and the overall quality appears to have hit a massive spike in recent years. With so many great video game franchises, every gamer believes their favorite game should be the next one to get a film.

We got everything from big success stories like Baldur's Gate 3 and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom to memorable indies in Venba and Chants of Sennaar. But from the business side, 2023 was a lot more tumultuous. While some notable studio acquisitions and game announcements happened, thousands of developers were laid off, entire studios were shut down or hacked, and the provider of one of the most popular game engines landed in hot water after trying to roll out a controversial change.

The most notable gaming news stories of 2023 run the gamut from genuinely exciting to thoroughly disappointed. That speaks to a video game industry bound to head into an odd 2024 that lacks the known quantity bombshells of this year and continues to reel from layoffs. In last year's iteration of this article, my editor said that the 2020s are shaping up to be "the most pivotal decade in gaming history when all is said and done." If this year is anything to go by, that will almost certainly be true. These were the gaming stories that defined 2023, for better and much worse.

Bethesda turns Skyrim into a mod platform with new Creations feature
Aldmeri Anti-Mage is one of the mods available through Bethesda Game Studios Creations in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is over 12 years old at this point, but a hefty Bethesda Game Studios update that dropped today is meant to revitalize its modding community. It turns the game into an easily accessible platform with user-made mode content, even on console.

Building on what was once the Bethesda Creation Club, this new feature is called Bethesda Game Studios Creations. Its first implementation is in Skyrim Special Edition and Skyrim Anniversary Edition across PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, and PS5. Bethesda created a Creations storefront where players can buy and download mods that add anything from items to new characters and questlines. It's also letting Skyrim mod creators join its Verified Creator program so they can set prices for their mods and earn royalties from the sales.
