Making sure your equipment is as powerful as possible is an obvious but essential tip and trick to remember while playing Avowed. Your skills will play a large part in combat, especially when you rebind them for easy access, but your armor and weapons will be the most important factors in how tough the game is to beat. Upgrading your gear is the best way to keep up with the difficulty, but it isn't long before you hit walls where you need much more materials than you have to get to the next tier. Breaking down extra weapons and armor you find will be the best way to get your hands on more of these precious materials, and you can do it right from the menu. Here's how.

How to break down equipment in Avowed

Any piece of armor or weapon can be broken down from the pause menu. When looking at that item, you can see what materials it will give you when broken down at the bottom of its description so you know if it will give you what you need. Generally speaking, the gear you break down will give the same materials needed to upgrade gear of that type. Wands give materials needed to upgrade wands, for example.

Step 1: Find some gear that you don't mind breaking into materials and losing.

Step 2: Open your menu and go to the Inventory

Step 3: Highlight the gear you want to break down.

Step 4: As long as you're not currently using it, hold X on console or R on PC to break it down into materials.

If you have anything you already upgraded and want to break that down because you found something better, you will still get back most of the materials you have added to it, but not all. In most cases, breakind down any excess gear you find is a better use than selling it for the small amount of gold they tend to net you.

How to transmog and hide gear in Avowed
A masked figure in Avowed. The mask looks like it's made of gold, it has glowing red eyes, and there's a hood over its head.

In older RPGs, you would have to sacrifice that armor set you love the look of for the newer one that had better stats. In Avowed, it isn't exactly a secret tip or trick that wearing the more powerful gear is important, but that doesn't mean you need to sacrifice fashion. If you're playing in third-person especially, you want to make sure your character looks cool while exploring and using your flashy skills. Transmog has become more common lately, and thankfully is present in Avowed so you can wear the most powerful armor while still appearing like your old favorite. Or, you can hide all your armor completely if you want. Here's how to do both.

Avowed is a very flexible game in terms of letting you use any weapon or piece of armor you want. You will be investing points into your stats, to unlock abilities, and unlock companion abilities as you earn XP and level up. These skills will completely change how your game plays both in and out of combat, but you don't have to stick with whatever direction you picked first if you end up regretting it. Here's how you can respec your character in Avowed.

Where to find the cartographer in Dawntrail in Avowed
An environment shot of the Dawnshore Eastern Overlands in Avowed.

After the tutorial teaches you the essential tips and tricks for playing Avowed, you will be set free in the Living Lands. Almost right away you will encounter a man named Sanza who has an important side quest for you to locate a missing cartographer. While you might be eager to complete the main story, side quests are important for unlocking new abilities and exploring the world. Unlike most side quests, however, this one only gives you a vague written description of where the cartographer is instead of a marker on your map to travel to. Even though each zone in Avowed isn't massive, there is still a lot of ground to cover when looking for a single person. Here's where you can find the cartographer in Dawntrail.
Where to find the missing cartographer

The side quest only says that the cartographer should be located near some cliffs on the east side of Dawntrail, which is quite a big place to search. The area you're looking for is called Usher's Hand and is directly east of Paradis. If you go out the eastern exit and head north, you will find it no problem.
