The announcement of a new Civilization game is one of the only things that strikes both joy and fear into the hearts of fans in equal measure. On one hand, they know they’re about to begin one of the most engaging, frustrating, rewarding, and deep 4X games ever created. On the other, they know that booting this game up has the mystical power to fast-forward time by multiple hours in the blink of an eye. You might start a game at 9 p.m., planning to play a few rounds, only to look back at the clock and see that it’s 6 a.m. the following morning. Before you start coming up with excuses to get out of work and stockpiling microwavable food, here’s everything we know so far about Civilization 7.

Civilization 7 will launch on February 11, 2025.

Platforms

Even though 2025 will be the fifth year of the current generation of consoles, Civilization 7 is already confirmed to be a cross-generational game. It will be available for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and even Nintendo Switch.

Sid Meier’s Civilization VII - Official Teaser Trailer

We got the first teaser trailer for Civilization 7 during the 2024 Summer Game Fest. It is only CGI footage that pans through models of various cultures in battle with a voice-over and no in-game footage.

Additional trailers debuted during Gamescom Opening Night Live 2024 and are detailed in the Gameplay section below.

Sid Meier’s Civilization VII - Gameplay Reveal Trailer

As promised, we got our first look at gameplay during Gamescom Opening Night Live 2024. After a brief run-through of the series’ history, we finally see Civilization 7 in action. Graphically, it is far superior to any game before it, but it still has that same style and readability, with exaggerated people and a grid-based map. Several civilizations are shown, such as the Aztecs, Egyptians, and ancient Chinese, as well as modern militaries with tanks and planes.

Civilization 7 came back not long after its trailer at Opening Night Live as the subject of a more in-depth stream that goes over gameplay. It also revealed that Gwendoline Christie of Game of Thrones fame will be the new narrator.

The gameplay went over a lot of the expected mechanics for a Civ game, such as building your empire and negotiating with other historical figures across history. However, this time around, you can select a leader independently from the civilization you’re leading. This opens up untold possibilities for playstyles and new ways to shape your growing empire.

Multiplayer will allow players to compete in both standard games that can last quite the length of time or shorter single-age sessions. It was also revealed that Civilization 7 will be a cross-platform game.

Civilization 7 is perfect for strategy newcomers. I would know

Having grown up almost exclusively playing games on consoles, PC games have always had this air of complexity surrounding them that kept me from engaging with them. I would see games like Fallout, Baldur's Gate, and Sim City in magazines or online and instantly feel overwhelmed by the density of what I was seeing. Compared to the games I was playing at the time, they appeared so sophisticated and intimidating to a newcomer that I inadvertently developed something of an aversion to playing on the platform as a whole.

I would later embrace PC as a platform alongside consoles, but a few genres remained locked away in my mind as being too intensive and unwelcoming for someone who didn't cut their teeth on them as a kid. 4X strategy games were at the top of that pile, which made me very uncertain how my time with Civilization VII would go. After my first weekend with the game flew by in what felt like an hour or two, it has cured my phobia towards the genre.
Learning to be a leader
From the outside, 4X games looked like all the most complex elements of a large-scale simulation, resource management sim, and turn-based tactics game wrapped into one. Admittedly, having never given one a proper chance before Civilization VII, I just assumed the only way to learn the game was to read a massive tome of instructions and be willing to spend hours of trial and error to understand how everything worked.

Battlefield 6: everything we know so far

The genre of realistic, competitive FPS games is dominated by a few titles. Call of Duty has become synonymous with multiplayer shooters for over a decade now, but Battlefield at one point was a strong rival. Unlike CoD, we don't see a new Battlefield game on the list of upcoming video games every year, so the franchise isn't always top of mind outside of its hardcore fanbase. The last entry was a disappointment for almost everyone, so we've been waiting for the announcement of the next entry to start fresh, somewhat like Onimusha: Way of the Sword and Perfect Dark. We have only seen the tiniest glimpse at the future, but here is the full loadout on everything we know about what we're calling Battlefield 6.
Release window

We know that EA and Battlefield Studios are gearing up to bring players into various playtests for Battlefield 6 thanks to the Battlefield Labs program. That said, it was made abundantly clear that when these tests do start, the game will be in a pre-alpha state. How long a game is in pre-alpha before launch can vary, but EA at least currently expects the game within its 2026 fiscal year according to its third-quarter earnings report. That would mean the game could be released any time between April 1, 2025, and March 31, 2026.

Mario Kart 9: Everything we know so far

Mario Kart 8 has easily earned its spot as one of the best Switch games ever made despite being a WiiU port. Even though it wasn't brand new, it was the perfect game to reveal the Switch with, but we've had plenty of time to master all the tracks over the years. Nintendo decided to recreate that moment when revealing the Switch 2 by showing off a new entry in the kart racing franchise. While the game wasn't technically named Mario Kart 9, there's a good chance Nintendo will stick to its naming formula for this entry. Fasten your seatbelts because we're going activate Star Power and blast through all the information we know so far about Mario Kart 9.
Release window

There is no release date for Mario Kart 9, but considering it was shown off with the Switch 2 reveal, it is almost guaranteed that it will be a lunch game. Sadly, we don't know the Switch 2 release date yet, either, except that it will be in 2025. We should know more after the next Nintendo Direct in April.
Platforms
Technically Mario Kart 9 could be a cross-platform game, but the only system we know for sure it will run on is the Switch 2. We would guess it would be a Switch 2 exclusive, but will update you once we get confirmation either way.
