Cyberpunk 2077 will get free DLC, studio confirms

After Cyberpunk 2077 launches later this year, the game will deliver free DLC, CD Projekt Red confirmed this weekend.

When pressed on Twitter whether Cyberpunk 2077 will offer free DLC post-launch, the game’s developer CD Projekt Red shared a GIF of the Kool-Aid Man bursting through a wall and delivering his famous catchphrase, “Ohhh yeaahh!” The studio didn’t share any details on the DLC or what might be in it.

Still, there may be some clues to how CD Projekt Red plans to handle DLC in how the studio delivered free content in The Witcher 3.

After that game launched in 2016, CD Projekt Red offered 16 free DLC packs. A new pack was delivered to players each week and featured two pieces of DLC. In some cases, that meant free armor or hairstyles. In others, it meant new gameplay elements and missions.

However, free DLC should not be confused with expansions. In April, CD Projekt Red said that it will launch expansion packs that extend the Cyberpunk 2077 story beyond launch. Those expansion packs, which haven’t been announced, will be paid.

Again, The Witcher could be a reference point here. For that game, CD Projekt Red offered two expansions — Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine. Hearts of Stone was available for $10, and Blood and Wine set players back $20. A bundle with both expansions in one cost $25.

Cyberpunk 2077 may be CD Projekt Red’s most ambitious franchise yet. The game, which will launch on November 19, will place players inside a sprawling metropolis called Night City. Players will be able to explore the city and get to know people throughout the universe, all while serving as a mercenary in search of an implant that can make people immortal.

The game has been in development since 2013 and was initially slated to launch in April. In January, the studio delayed the launch to September, and in June, CD Projekt Red said it was delaying the game to November to “go through everything, balance game mechanics, and fix a lot of bugs.”

In addition to current-generation consoles, Cyberpunk 2077 will also be available on Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 after they launch later this year.

No more GPUs? Here’s what Nvidia’s DLSS 10 could look like
RTX 4070 logo on a graphics card.

The latest version of Nvidia's Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) is already a major selling point for some of its best graphics cards, but Nvidia has much bigger plans. According to Bryan Catanzaro, Nvidia's vice president of Applied Deep Learning Research, Nvidia imagines that DLSS 10 would have full neural rendering, bypassing the need for graphics cards to actually render a frame.

During a roundtable discussion hosted by Digital Foundry, Catanzaro delved deeper into what DLSS could evolve into in the future, and what kinds of problems machine learning might be able to tackle in games. We already have DLSS 3, which is capable of generating entire frames -- a huge step up from DLSS 2, which could only generate pixels. Now, Catanzaro said with confidence that the future of gaming lies in neural rendering.

All new weapons in Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty DLC
Two gangsters looking at a row of guns on the floor.

CD Projekt Red is known for adding tons of content any time it releases an expansion to one of its games, and Phantom Liberty is certainly no exception. The biggest addition is obviously the entire new zone called Dogtown and the storyline it contains, but there are plenty of other additions that add even more reasons to take a trip back to Night City. Aside from the new Relic skill tree to experiment with, there are a handful of new guns you can get your hands on and test out against the improved enemy AI. These new guns are mixed in with all the rest, so if you're jumping back into the game after a while, you might not recognize them. Here are all the new weapons introduced in the Phantom Liberty expansion.
Every new gun in Phantom Liberty
Grit - Auto Pistol
Looking like a smaller, yellow UZi, the Grit is a rapid-firing pistol with a huge clip.
Hercules - Special
The only special weapon introduced is the Hercules. Considering special weapons are always a treat to find, we'll leave this gun's function a secret for you to discover yourself.
Order - Shotgun
Looking like a Frankenstein's monster of a shotgun, the Order is an illegal double barrel that doesn't play around.
Osprey - Sniper
This sniper comes with a massive clip and bulky design that indicates just how much punch each shot will pack.
Rasetsu - Sniper
A more sleek sniper, the Rasetsu also can use a mounting attachment to pull off tough shots.
Thermal Katana - Melee
While you can't get a lightsaber in Phantom Liberty, this burning blade is the second-best thing.
Warden - SMG
Like the big brother of the Grit, this yellow SMG is also illegal and built for an insane rate of fire.
