Dead By Daylight adds its most fearsome monster yet: Nicolas Cage

Asymmetrical horror game Dead by Daylight is adding another iconic character to its roster. Well, maybe not so much a character as a very real person. Nicolas Cage is coming to the game.

Yes, you read that right.

Dead by Daylight is known for adding classic horror characters to the game, pulling from series like Resident Evil, Halloween, Scream, and more. It’s even added some Hollywood icons from horror film history, like Bruce Campbell’s Ash Williams. Its next character will apparently take that trend even further by simply adding Nicolas Cage — not one of his characters, but the man himself.

The news comes from a very short teaser video on Dead by Daylight‘s Twitter account. The 42-second clip features a voiceover from Cage, who gives a short speech about “transforming everything you think you may know.” The clip ends with his faithfully rendered digital self staring into the camera.

Details on what exactly that means for Dead by Daylight are currently unclear. The video notes that more specifics are coming on July 5, so we can only speculate for now. Will he be featured as a monster or a survivor? Will we get different skins depicting his iconic roles throughout his career? And will we get a full voice acting performance from him? We’ll have to wait a few months to find out.

Nicolas Cage is no stranger to the horror genre, so his inclusion isn’t too left-field. He just recently starred in the horror-comedy Renfield, where he plays Dracula. Perhaps this is all just a tease to confirm that the actor will land a role in the upcoming Dead by Daylight film adaptation.

Alan Wake is coming to Dead by Daylight later this month
Alan Wake in Dead by Daylight.

Behaviour Interactive announced today that multiplayer horror game Dead by Daylight will cross over with Remedy Entertainment's Alan Wake later this month.

Alan Wake is just the latest of several crossover characters to come by Dead by Daylight. Just last year, the multiplayer horror game crossed over with franchises like Alien and Child's Play; Nicolas Cage also came to the game as a survivor. This Alan Wake crossover feels particularly timely, as Alan Wake 2 launched in October 2023 to critical acclaim, bringing Remedy Entertainment's cult classic horror franchise into the mainstream.

Dead by Daylight goes single-player with The Casting of Frank Stone
A man wearing a mangled welding helmet.

Behaviour Interactive revealed The Casting of Frank Stone, a new narrative-focused single-player horror title set in the Dead by Daylight universe, at The Game Awards 2023.

Dead by Daylight has stayed relevant in the competitive landscape of live-service multiplayer titles in no small part due to the rollout of horror films' most iconic characters, as well as its addicting gameplay. For as popular as this asymmetrical game centered around four survivors attempting to avoid and escape one powerful killer --such as Chucky, Ghostface, and even Nic Cage -- has become, a strong narrative has never been a key ingredient in its success. We already knew the universe would be expanded with a Blumhouse-produced film adaptation, however, we now know that players looking to fully engross themselves in a new original story in that universe will finally get that chance.

I played The Walking Dead: Betrayal with one of its developers and they backstabbed me
A player runs away from a zombie horde in The Walking Dead: Betrayal.

While Among Us didn’t invent the social deduction genre, it’s certainly the game that popularized and nearly perfected it. That’s why it isn’t surprising that many games have tried to mimic and build upon its success over the years, from indies like Goose Goose Duck to Fortnite, one of the most popular games in the world. The latest of the games to try and take on Innersloth’s hit is The Walking Dead: Betrayal from Other Ocean Interactive, the developers of Project Winter.

Curious to see what a licensed social deception game would be like in a post-Among Us world, I jumped at the chance to play a match of Betrayal with a developer. What I found was a multiplayer deduction game that prioritizes roles a lot more than its peers and brings more action into the experience. On top of that, it feels like a true The Walking Dead game, with odds that feel very stacked against its survivors.
Setting the stage
Matches in The Walking Dead: Betrayal support up to eight players, who are supposed to work together to fix an objective within their safe zone and then leave the map without succumbing to an encroaching walker horde. Everyone has a unique role, like a Bodyguard who must protect another player or risk their stats being drained faster for the rest of the game or a tailor who can craft walker skin suits. Two players, called Traitors, are trying to sabotage the completion of that objective, although they can be exiled from the safe zone if they come under suspicion.
