Grezzo's 'Ever Oasis' takes influence from its work on The Legend of Zelda

Ever Oasis - Overview Trailer (Nintendo 3DS)
While the Switch has taken over the Nintendo spotlight since its launch in March, Nintendo has not forgotten its trusty handheld line. From the upcoming Nintendo 2DS XL, to Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, Nintendo obviously thinks the 3DS and Switch can coexist. And in just a couple of weeks, Ever Oasis arrives for 3DS. If you have not been keeping up with the new action-adventure RPG, you may want to, considering developer Grezzo was responsible for 3DS ports of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask, as well as leading development on The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes. Nintendo just released a new trailer and it is readily apparent that Grezzo’s work on the iconic Zelda franchise influenced Ever Oasis.

The trailer shows a seedling roll up to an oasis that was destroyed by “Chaos.” The seedling, Tethu, hatches before the eyes of a water spirit, Esna, and the two powers unite to form the last oasis. The oasis serves as your village, which you will build up from scratch while bringing in lost desert wanderers. The town aspect of the game is reminiscent of Animal Crossing, but as the trailer shows, building up your oasis is only a small part of the game.

From a third-person perspective, we see Tethu explore a vast open world. Players can take control of different party members, and recruit more team members along the way. Each party member appears to have a unique ability that will assist in solving puzzles. Tethu’s foremost power in the trailer is to create cyclones to clear paths.

Grezzo’s work on the Zelda series, particularly Tri Force Heroes, shows as Tethu and his party need to work together to solve puzzles. Chaos, the mythical enemy that captured Tethu’s older brother, deploys legions of enemies to try to impede Tethu’s progress. Combat occurs in real time, but there is an RPG leveling system and slews of different weapons to pick up and equip. Near the end of the trailer, keeping with the Zelda vibe, Tethu and team appear to enter a dungeon.

Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom isn’t our Game of the Year, but it’s the strongest No. 2 ever
Link giving a thumbs-up with a smile.

When we asked our writers to give us a list of their favorite games of 2023, everyone had a different game in the top spot. We saw votes for Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Alan Wake 2, Hi-Fi Rush, and even Sonic Superstars. Baldur's Gate 3 ultimately won out, but what stuck out to me the most following that process was how, on almost everyone's list, the same game was in that No. 2 slot: The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

Released by Nintendo in May after a long wait, Tears of the Kingdom would have been the industry's unequivocal game of the year in any other year. Although its competition was too stiff in this packed year for that to be the case, that doesn't make Tears of the Kingdom any less of an experience. In fact, I think that earning a spot near the top on almost everyone's personal list at Digital Trends demonstrates how widely appealing Nintendo's latest Zelda game is and that end-of-year gaming conversations should be about uplifting great games, not nitpicking their flaws to determine which one's the best.
Recognizing great games
Tears of the Kingdom is a monumental achievement in open-world game design. It essentially has three worlds stacked on top of each other. From almost any point in Hyrule, it's possible to stop, look around, and find several points of interest around, above, and below yourself. That alone makes it a game that consistently delivers a sense of awe and discovery, even after dozens of hours of playtime.

Best Legend of Zelda boss fights
Ganondorf screams in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

One of the core pillars that the Legend of Zelda franchise is known for is its impressive boss battles. Every entry shakes things up with a new cast of powerful and unique bosses to take down at the end of a dungeon. While there are a few that have shown up across multiple entries -- we're looking at you Ganon -- even when they're repeated, fighting them is never the same experience.

The best bosses are ones that test the player to think critically, almost like solving a puzzle, offer a new way to play, are massive spectacles, or all three at once. With dozens of fantastic bosses across all of Link's adventures, narrowing down the best ones was a tough fight on its own, but we've survived and can now present our list of the best Legend of Zelda bosses of all time.
