Fable fans have waited since 2010 for a true Albion adventure, and it looks like they’ll have to keep waiting a bit longer just like those waiting for Perfect Dark and Okami 2. The next installment in the franchise, just titled Fable instead of Fable 4, is in production as an upcoming video game but from a studio known only for its racing games rather than fantasy RPGs. The story is beginning to become a bit more clear now, however, so here’s everything we know about Fable.
You can expect Fable to be an upcoming Xbox Series X game and an upcoming PC game, but we will have to wait and see if it will also be an upcoming PS5 game.
Release window
Fable was given a release window for 2025 but was just announced to be pushed back into 2026. The news came from the Xbox Podcast where Craig Duncan said “While I know that’s not maybe the news people want to hear, what I want to assure people of is that it’s definitely worth the wait. I have unequivocal confidence in the Playground team.”
Platforms
Fable is still in development for Xbox Series X/S and PC. With the shift in Xbox’s strategy, however, it is very possible that PlayStation users will also be able to join in on this adventure at or not long after launch. Game Pass subscribers will also be able to play it on launch through that service as well.
Trailer
The first look we got at Fable was little more than a tone-setter and meant to build up some hype. It reintroduces us to this fantastical world, as well as the comedic tones the series is known for.
It wasn’t until 2023 that we saw Fable again, but this time we got a much better look at both the game and the tone. The entire thing was labeled in-game footage but doesn’t show much of what looks to be actual gameplay.
We are introduced to a man named Dave, an apparent vegetable enthusiast, monologuing over the rest of the trailer with some dry humor.
The hero we see is a woman, which could be an option as it was in prior games, or perhaps this time we will be playing as a set character. This is also the first time we hear our protagonist speak, which could imply a more set character.
The Xbox Games Showcase trailer follows the same format of the previous one of being an interview of sorts, this time with a retired hero named Humphry. There is a slight hint at the story here, as he explains knowing a former hero who made some wrong choices. At the very end of the trailer we see him and the main character approach some figure in a robe holding a staff who claims “I’m going to fix it — this place.”
Gameplay
Swordplay will be a given, including some cinematic takedowns, plus magic like a fireball. There was also a spell that launched up a group of enemies that were then sniped out of the air with a bow.
In terms of enemies, we see a handful of human foes, a look at some kind of werewolf, little goblin creatures, and a big tree monster.
The trailer also implies plenty of social interactions, which has been a staple of the series since the beginning. Again, we don’t see how they will work or if the minigame-style systems will come back.
There’s a fantastic shot of the iconic chicken-kick, so hopefully that will be included in the final release.
Preorder
There is currently no way to preorder Fable since it won’t be coming until sometime in 2026. As soon as that information is made public, we will give you all the details.
