You can vote for The Game Awards in Fortnite and meet an uncanny Geoff Keighley

Fortnite is once again holding a special in-game edition of The Game Awards, and players can vote for their favorite creator-developed islands.

The limited-time world, called The Game Awards Vote in Fortnite, lets players easily explore the nominated islands, which include an MMO, multiple escape room, and a roguelike. They can vote by going to the world and voting before 9 p.m. ET December 11, the day before the awards air. You can get there with island code 0853-1358-8532.

Since this is Fortnite, it also lets players battle in an arena to earn currency. Then there’s the Unreal Engine-generated Game Awards host Geoff Keighley.

Keighley was very excited in an official Epic Games blog post about getting re-created in Fortnite, which was done through MetaHuman in Unreal. The framework purports to make it easy for developers to create realistic-looking human characters in less than an hour. It also has a cloud-based app that lets you create a character quickly, multiple presets, and an app you can use to animate your person. Keighley’s uncanny likeness was brought into Unreal using greenscreen video capture. You can see how it turned out in the video below, but we think we’ll stick with the real version for now.

Fortnite Festival will leave you wishing for a real Rock Band revival

It’s been a wild three days for Fortnite. First, the battle royale game expanded with Lego Fortnite, a full survival crafting game with extensive brick-building. Just one day later, Psyonix dropped its latest game, the excellent Rocket Racing, in the app. Epic Games is completing its hat trick today with Fortnite Festival, a music experience crafted by Guitar Hero-maker Harmonix. It’s a fitting way to cap off a festive few days for the most popular game around -- or, at least, it sounds like one on paper.

In reality, Fortnite Festival is the oddest addition to the live service game's new offerings. It essentially adds both Rock Band and Fuser into Fortnite, though each is implemented in a way that doesn’t quite live up to their full counterparts. Whereas Rocket Racing feels like a fully original game that could have stood on its own, Fortnite Festival plays more like the bonus mode you’d probably expect from this endeavor.

After a year filled with generation-defining games and devastating layoffs, the gaming industry got a moment to celebrate its wins at The Game Awards 2023. The 10th annual event, produced by host Geoff Keighley, was another watercooler spectacle for creators and fans to discuss. This year’s eclectic show featured tons of game trailers, celebrity cameos, Muppets, and a hair metal musical performance complete with interpretive dancing. There was only one thing missing: the awards.

As has been increasingly the case as the show has grown in scale over the years, the actual awards took a back seat to pageantry. Most winners were hastily rattled off in short breaks between trailers, and the few that actually did get to accept awards didn’t get much time to do so. The show garnered a mixed reaction from viewers as a result, with many questioning if the show is an effective celebration of those who make games.

We've come to the end of 2023, and after a year of gigantic, highly anticipated releases and delightful surprises in the video game world, we've come to the expected conclusion. Some of the biggest games of the last few years, like Baldur's Gate 3 and Alan Wake 2, battled it out for the top prize amid a varied string of announcements Thursday night, with Baldur's Gate 3 eventually emerging with six wins, including Game of the Year and Best Performance for Neil Newbon. Alan Wake 2, which had the same number of nominations as Baldur's Gate 3, received three awards and stole the show with the Herald of Darkness live performance. Elsewhere, Cocoon and Sea of Stars scored in the indie categories, while Forza Motorsport snuck in with two wins.

However, the main focus of The Game Awards is the announcements, which set the stage for the next year of releases. Not only did we get details on Hideo Kojima's Xbox game, but we also got reveals for Monster Hunter Wild, God of War DLC, Arkane Lyon's new game, and so much more.
