Pride Month 2021: Here’s how video game studios are celebrating

June is Pride Month, a celebration of LGBTQIA+ communities and folks around the world. Like many companies, video game studios are celebrating with a myriad of deals, donations, and free digital content for players to get their hands on. Here’s a collection of what video game companies are doing to celebrate Pride Month.

Microsoft celebrates Pride

Microsoft is rolling out several freebies for some of its biggest games. The 2021 Forza Rainbow livery for the 2017 Ford Focus RS is available in Forza Horizon 4 and Forza Motorsport 7. In the Halo: Master Chief Collection, players can customize their profile with the new Unity nameplate. Gears of War 5 players can now earn the Pixelated Heart Banner through the MS Reward Punch Card.

In addition to the in-game content, Microsoft is donating $150,000 to LGBTQIA+ nonprofits as well as matching donations to certain nonprofits when Microsoft Rewards members donate through Xbox. For the full list check out the Microsoft site.

Tell Me Why free on Xbox and PC

Dontnod, the developers of Life is Strange, are allowing people to play Tell Me Why for free through the Xbox Marketplace and through Steam. Tell Me Why follows the story of Tyler and Alyson, twins from Alaska, and their childhood lives and how each of them perceived it. Dontnod says that Tyler is the first playable transgender man from a major game studio.

Celebrating Pride With You – Riot Games

Riot Games is celebrating pride month in all of its games this month. The Rainbow Poros Icon is available in each Riot title this month. The rainbow home guard trails make a return in League of Legends as well as Wild Rift. Ellie the Elephant, a new guardian, is available in Legends of Runeterra and new victory animations for TFT. In addition to in-game content, the Riot Games will be selling Pride Month merch with 100% of the net profit going to the It Gets Better Project.

Queer Games Bundle 2021 on Itch.io

Itch.io has a new Queer Games Bundle this year with 200 games included. All of these games were created by queer developers and artists. The bundle can be purchased for $60 or for a pay-what-you-can sliding model. With this bundle, every purchase is divided equally among all developers participating in it. If you want to purchase this bundle it is available starting June 1 through June 31.

There are tons of exciting features coming to Nintendo Switch 2, but what's the one thing I'm most excited about? Nintendo GameCube games are coming to Switch Online. I know it's the nostalgia talking, but I can't help it. The Nintendo GameCube was my first real childhood console and I have a lot of warm memories tied to it as a result. I can't wait to jump back into games like F-Zero GX and Soulcalibur 2, two defining games of my childhood, the first chance I get.

My love for the GameCube isn't just about the good memories, though. To this day, I still believe that the GameCube features perhaps the best exclusive video game lineup of any console. It's not a deep catalogue, but it featured some of Nintendo's most experimental swings as well as some oddball third-party exclusives that have rarely been ported to other platforms since. With the Switch Online upgrade, there's now a great opportunity for Nintendo to bring some of those great games back from the grave, just as it's already doing with games like Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance. These are the eight games that I hope to see add in the service's first year (assuming that recently remastered games like Metroid Prime are out of the equation).

The best game of 2025 is out today -- and it's not Grand Theft Auto 6.

Blue Prince is the best reviewed game of the year so far, beating out Split Fiction and Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. You'll understand why as soon as you start playing it. The puzzle game is one of the most unique video games I've ever played, taking the mysterious vibe of Riven and slotting it into a brainy roguelike about an ever-shifting manor. It's filled with tough puzzles that might take you years to solve without a guide, and that's a good thing. While you might be tempted to look up answers as soon as possible, Blue Prince is better the less you know about it.

Sloclap, the team behind the iconic kung-fu sim Sifu, is launching a brand-new football (soccer for Americans) game called Rematch. The title will release on PC, Xbox Series, and PlayStation 5 on June 19 for $30, with preorders opening up now so you're ready for kickoff. Move over, FIFA; there's a new sheriff in town.

If you don't want to wait that long, there's an open beta in just over a week that you can join at www.playrematch.com. The beta is open April 18 and 19 on Steam and will center around 5v5 and 4v4 matches. Sloclap invites players to start practicing during the beta so they can be at the top of their game when the title does officially launch, but it warns that "teamwork, strategy, and skill" are at the core of the game. Sorry, folks; your Rocket League skills won't help out much.
