Inside Xbox reveals big changes to Gears 5 Horde Mode at Gamescom 2019

Microsoft’s Inside Xbox presentation at Gamescom 2019 brought plenty of exciting Gears 5 content for fans who just can’t wait a few more weeks for the official launch. Horde mode makes a return in the latest game, and it’s shaping up to be even more dynamic and exciting than it was in the past.

Horde mode includes the same general premise it had in past games — defend yourself against waves of enemies without dying — but it has been altered in a few ways to encourage more aggressive and agile play-styles. Instead of picking a set base for defending, you now can capture “power taps” that open up over the course of a match. This means you’ll have to move around the map routinely, and fortify numerous areas instead of just one. The currency Power has also been changed so it will distribute evenly to your other cooperative partners. Up to five people can play Horde together.

Taking a page out of the Overwatch playbook, Gears 5 also adds Ultimate abilities that are unique to each character. These include an airstrike for JD Fenix, a vehicle-hijacking ability for Jack, and an invisibility cloak for Jack. With these abilities, you can take out a huge number of enemies or slip away to safety in order to keep a game going. You’ll be able to increase your abilities usefulness with a set of cards that increase in power over a match, as well as perks that will improve across multiple matches.

Gears 5 isn’t the only Gears of War game in the works, however. Gears Tactics will be coming to PC,  and Gears Pop!  is a mobile tactics game launching on iOS, Windows 10, and Android. Progression will sync across all devices, and it will launch on August 22 for all systems. Though adorable, the signature  Gears of War flavor is still very much intact.

Xbox Game Pass’ new Standard tier is missing some big games

Players are digging into Xbox Game Pass now that the company has officially launched its new Xbox Game Pass Standard tier. However, they've discovered that it's missing quite a few noteworthy titles, including some that were already on the service before Xbox switched to its new payment structure.

Xbox published a post on September 10 marking the move, and explaining its new Game Pass plans in a succinct manner. Want to just use your Xbox for multiplayer? Grab Game Pass Core. Just want games on your PC? Get PC Game Pass. Game Pass Standard, arguably the most confusing new tier of the bunch when it was announced back in July, is for people who want to "level up [their] Xbox console gaming experience at a great value." It costs $15 per month compared to Ultimate's $20 per month (up from $17).

One of the PS5’s best exclusives is coming to Xbox, and it’s still great
Key art for Kena: Bridge of Spirits.

There has been a lot of talk this year about Xbox console exclusives like Hi-Fi Rush, As Dusk Falls, and Sea of Thieves going multiplatform and being readily available on the PlayStation 5 as a result. For once, we're seeing that process work the other way around.

Next week, Ember Labs will release Kena: Bridge of Spirits on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. This game has a reputation as being one of the best-looking PS5 exclusives. Having gone hands-on with its Xbox Series X port, I can say that Kena: Bridge of Spirits is just as good as it's ever been on the new platform. If you never had a chance to try Kena: Bridge of Spirits because you don't own a PS5, this Xbox port gives you the perfect excuse to check out this memorable adventure.

One of Xbox’s big purchases looks like it’s about to pay off

With its Activision Blizzard acquisition, Microsoft got access to some highly successful franchises, like Diablo and Call of Duty. It also got more casual, mobile titles, like those from the Candy Crush franchise, thanks to Activision Blizzard subsidiary King. The hope was that it could expand into mobile gaming -- and it looks like players might see the fruits of that labor soon.

Microsoft confirmed to The Verge on Friday that testing has begun on a "browser-based mobile store." It looks like it'll soon be available to Xbox Insiders, according to a post on X (formerly Twitter) from Xbox enthusiast account Klorbrille. The post links to a site that has "mobilestore" in the URL and a "Coming Soon" banner.
