Grand Theft Auto 5 is, by any measuring stick, a massive success. It is on the way to earning the title “phenomenon” as it continues to score records and shatter sales expectations. In fact, the game has done so well that it has set seven new Guinness World Records.

The records are (courtesy of GameSpot):

  1. Best-selling action-adventure videogame in 24 hours
  2. Best-selling videogame in 24 hours
  3. Fastest entertainment property to gross $1 billion
  4. Fastest videogame to gross $1 billion
  5. Highest grossing videogame in 24 hours
  6. Highest revenue generated by an entertainment product in 24 hours
  7. Most viewed trailer for an action-adventure videogame

While all the records are impressive, the one that really stands out is the game’s sprint to $1 billion in three days, making it the fastest entertainment property – not just video game – to reach this milestone. It can be argued that games are more expensive than things like movie tickets or albums, but that probably doesn’t matter much to Take Two or Rockstar.

GTAV’s budget was rumored to be as much as $265 million ($150 million of which was spent on marketing), which would still make it less expensive than a Hollywood blockbuster. By comparison, The Avengers has a listed budget of $220 million, but that does not include the advertising budget, said to also be around $150 million. That means that regardless of the cost of the product, a video game earned just as much (and may end up earning considerably more) than some of the biggest films of all time. Throw whatever asterisk you like on that figure, but the bottom line is that a video game just became the most profitable form of entertainment of the year (so far).

At this point it seems unlikely that any other property will break GTAV’s records, at least not this year, but there are a few games that could try. The record GTAV broke when it crossed $1 billion in three days belonged to Call of Duty: Black Ops II. It’s successor, Call of Duty: Ghosts, is due out on November 5. Even if it doesn’t top GTAV, it is likely to do very, very well, which is good for the gaming industry as a whole.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is unaffected by the video game voice actors strike
Lucia and her partner rob a store in GTA 6.

A lot of games will be affected by the SAG-AFTRA video game actors strike, but one of the most anticipated games of the next few years isn't one of them. In a statement to Kotaku, it was confirmed that Grand Theft Auto 6 isn't impacted by the strike.

“I can confirm GTA 6 is exempt,” a spokesperson for the publishers named in ongoing conversations said. The publication also learned that any games that were in development before September 2023 are unaffected, since that's when the union voted to authorize the strike.

Grand Theft Auto 5 story DLC was cut due to ‘cash cow’ GTA Online, dev says
Trevor firing an assault rifle in GTA 5.

Despite us being close to the Grand Theft Auto 6 launch, we're still getting news and anecdotes from Grand Theft Auto 5's development. According to a former Rockstar Games developer, the game was set to get a story DLC, but that it was canceled in favor of GTA Online.

Joe Rubino guested on the SanInPlay YouTube channel, and you can watch the whole interview below. Rubino, who was an editor and did second-unit directing on the DLC, described it as "kickass" and "awesome," but said that the success of GTA Online meant leaders at the company didn't think it was worth investing in both projects. He didn't offer up details on specifics, but said that Trevor actor Steven Ogg was involved.

Grand Theft Auto 6 just got the smallest teaser, but we’ll take what we can get
Woman in the GTA 6 trailer at a rooftop pool party. She's in a white bikini.

The line between teaser and Easter egg can be extremely slim, and nowhere has that been apparent on Tuesday than this necklace in the upcoming Grand Theft Auto 6.

A user on the GTA 6 subreddit (via Gamespot) noticed that a necklace that appeared in the game's first trailer is also now available to buy in the recently-released Bottom Dollar Bounties update for Grand Theft Auto Online, which added bail enforcement on June 25. It's called the "Silver Layered Necklace," and, according to one Redditor on the post, it's just one of many assets that seem to have come over to the franchise's online component.
