Grand Theft Auto V is coming and the first trailer will arrive on Nov. 2, 2011. We know this because, instead of issuing a lengthy press release, Rockstar simply changed its Website to a logo of the game and a date. Until that trailer comes out we can’t really tell you anything else about GTA V. Will it hit the PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii U in 2012? Will it be a launch title for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox 720? What kind of new gameplay mechanics will it employ? Your guess is as good as ours.

While the next generation of game consoles is a ways away, Rockstar rarely graces a single console with multiple numbered GTA games. GTA III was a PS2 game, GTA IV was released on current consoles a few years back. Having said that, this current generation of game consoles has lasted much longer than the typical five year cycle that has been in place since the original NES came out in the mid 1980s.

Update: As a reader astutely pointed out, GTA I and II were available on the PlayStation.

It’s almost time. After over a decade of waiting, we’ll finally get our first look at the next Grand Theft Auto game sometime this December. When it arrives, the Grand Theft Auto 6 reveal will be one of the biggest video game industry announcements of the year, regardless of what Rockstar Games shows. Despite that, there are specific things that the GTA 6 reveal trailer needs to tell us to live up to its hype.

Although Rockstar has said little about the project before now, GTA 6 might be one of the most anticipated games ever, and it’s following up one of the most successful individual video games of all time. I know this because I’ve played a part in this hype cycle myself -- and this very article is adding to it right now.
