Hitman 3 website issue preventing players from transferring data from previous games

Hitman 3 is out today, but players are already experiencing problems with carrying over progress from previous games. IO Interactive’s data transfer website is currently down and the studio says it’s working on a fix.

The brand-new stealth game allows players to carry levels and save data over from Hitman and Hitman 2. Developer IO Interactive set up a website to handle those requests, but it quickly went down following an influx of traffic.

We're hard at work on getting IOI Account back online to enable progression carryover.

We'll tell you when it's fully operational again. Please press F5 on Twitter instead of our site. We want it back up and running just as much as you do. Thanks! pic.twitter.com/4St0a2hYtQ

The developer tweeted that it’s currently working on a fix. IO Recommends that players follow along via the studio’s Twitter account rather than trying to refresh the website, which will only add more traffic.

The issue is especially problematic because of how Hitman 3 handles progression carryover. A player’s Hitman 3 data is erased when bringing save data over to it. That means that fans currently have to decide whether or not they should wait to start the game until the site is fixed or press on without their previous data.

The progression carryover has largely been a pain point around the otherwise acclaimed game. Before launch, IO announced that PC players would no longer be able to carry progress from Hitman 2 over unless they rebought the game, thanks to Hitman 3‘s exclusivity on the Epic Games Store. Epic says that a fix is currently in progress to allow players to take their progress into the Epic version of the game.

Hitman 3 is out today on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Our review calls it a “swan song to a fun trilogy of games, held up by its intricate locations and humorous gameplay.”

Ubisoft and more offer ways to play purchased Google Stadia games elsewhere
The protagonist of Assassin's Creed: Valhalla shouting in battle and wielding two axes.

Google recently announced that it plans to shutter its cloud gaming service Stadia in early 2023, leaving players who used it as one of their primary platforms in an awkward situation. Google already promised to refund people for their Google Stadia hardware and software purchases, but people are still losing access to games they enjoyed and save files they possibly dumped hours into. Thankfully, some developers are working on ways to help Stadia players.
The most notable studio to help Stadia players is Ubisoft, which was Google's earliest partner for the technology via an Assassin's Creed Odyssey demo. "While Stadia will shut down on January 18, 2023, we're happy to share that we're working to bring the games you own on Stadia to PC through Ubisoft Connect," Ubisoft tweeted. "We'll have more to share regarding specific details, as well as the impact for Ubisoft+ subscribers, at a later date." Thankfully, the Stadia versions of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Far Cry 6, Immortals Fenyx Rising, Tom Clancy’s The Division 2, and Watch Dogs: Legion support cross-progression, so players won't lose their save files.

Ubisoft isn't the only developer to help. Developer Muse Games is giving Embr Steam codes to those who played its comedic co-op firefighting game on Stadia if they email the developer with screenshots of Embr in their Stadia library. Meanwhile, IO Interactive confirmed that it is "looking into ways for you to continue your Hitman experience on other platforms," as the World of Assassination trilogy was available on Google Stadia.
There's still the matter of the five Google Stadia exclusives: Gylt, Hello Engineer, Outcasters, Pac-Man Mega Tunnel Battle, and PixelJunk Raiders. So far, only one of those games seems like it will be saved. PixelJunk Raiders developer Q-Games said in a blog post that "we hope to find a way to continue to share the vibrant worlds of Planet Tantal in the future, and we’re open to discussing opportunities to find the right publishing partner to make it happen.. Tequila Works, tinyBuild, Splash Damage, and Bandai Namco Entertainment did not respond to requests for comment from Digital Trends.
While the shutdown of Google Stadia is disappointing for players like myself who enjoy cloud gaming, at least players will be get refunds, and in some cases get the game for a new platform.

Hitman 3 showcases how pointless ray tracing can be
Agent 47 standing on a rainy street in China.

Nvidia and AMD revealed at Computex 2022 that Hitman 3 would receive support for ray tracing and both Nvidia and AMD's supersampling technologies, following an announcement from developer IO Interactive late last year. The update is here and I've had a chance to try it out, but I wasn't left salivating over all the visual glitter like I expected.

Ray tracing can certainly make visuals more realistic, but in this game, it proves that adding ray tracing to all games isn't necessary -- especially when it tanks performance without adding much in terms of noticeable benefit. Hitman 3 is a reality check, especially if you think ray tracing is the be-all and end-all of graphics.

If you bought Hitman 3 on Steam, you can upgrade it for free
hitman 3 steam free upgrade screenshot

Steam owners of Hitman 3 are getting free edition upgrades for the game courtesy of its development team, IO Interactive. The free updates come in the wake of a somewhat lackluster launch for the Steam version of the game that resulted in a loud uproar from adopters of the platform.

Hitman 3 originally released for PC platforms exclusively through the Epic Games Store. After a year of solely being available in Epic's marketplace, it arrived on Steam without a markdown in price, much to the dismay of those who waited for the end of the exclusivity period.
