Hideo Kojima has made an appearance at a Sony press conference ahead of the 2016 Tokyo Game Show to discuss Death Stranding. The legendary designer reaffirmed that the project is an action game, and gave some new information about what players can expect in terms of gameplay.
Kojima stated that Death Stranding will take place in an open-world setting, according to a report from Polygon. He also noted that the game is intended to connect players, which suggests that there will be some sort of multiplayer component, although it’s not entirely clear what form this will take.
The Metal Gear creator observed that most competitive and co-operative action games centered around players interacting with each other with “sticks,” whereas Death Stranding will also employ ropes that tether and connect players. “At the end of the day I want to offer an action game where people get connected with different elements, not just clubs,” Kojima explained via a translator.
Apparently, we’ve already seen some evidence of this theme of connection — the “drips” seen falling from the logo used in the game’s E3 trailer are in fact cords, according to a report from Gamespot. Even the word “stranding” in the game’s title is meant to related to the “strands” that connect people.
At this point, it’s difficult to determine whether Kojima is referring to thematic elements of Death Stranding with his references to connection, or to a particular gameplay mechanic.
Along with these more cryptic comments about the game, Kojima did offer up some concrete technical information. Death Stranding will support 4K resolution and HDR color output for users playing the game on the recently unveiled PlayStation 4 Pro. More details about the hotly anticipated title are expected to drop at TGS 2016.
