‘Lego Dimensions’ expands with playable ‘Ghostbusters,’ ‘Goonies,’ and more

Warner Bros. detailed a number of major expansions it has in store for its multi-platform action game Lego Dimensions, revealing that characters from films including Ghostbusters, Gremlins, and The Goonies will soon join its playable cast.

The publisher revealed that “30 of the world’s most popular entertainment brands” will team up with Lego Dimensions by the end of 2017, giving players access to dozens of new characters and themed levels.

Developer TT Games will also introduce new gameplay elements for Lego Dimensions in the coming months, including a four-player competitive Battle Arena mode and movie-specific Story Packs that will “provide deep, story-driven gameplay around the biggest theatrical releases and include a fresh Lego brick-building experience.”

Similar in approach to Activision’s Skylanders series and Disney’s recently retired Disney Infinity franchise, Lego Dimensions allows players to summon in-game characters by scanning plastic figures equipped with RFID tags. These characters can then be used throughout the game’s included story mode and all forthcoming expansions.

Warner Bros. will begin rolling out new Lego Dimensions content in September with the launch of a Ghostbusters Story Pack, which adds new characters and vehicles for use within “a complete movie-based gameplay experience with six puzzle-packed levels.”

A second Story Pack based on the upcoming animated film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will premiere later this year. 2016 will also see the launch of new Lego Dimensions levels and characters from the animated series Adventure Time and the Missions Impossible film franchise.

Other films and media franchises getting the Lego Dimensions treatment throughout the next year include The Goonies, Teen Titans, Knight Rider, The Powerpuff Girls, Gremlins, Beetlejuice and E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial. Sega’s mascot Sonic the Hedgehog will also be available as a playable Lego Dimensions character in a forthcoming expansion.

E3 2016: Bethesda’s E3 plans include Blink-182 show, return of Adam Sessler and Morgan Webb

The Lego Dimensions Ghostbusters Story Pack hits retail on September 27. Warner Bros. notes that additional characters, levels, and Story Packs “will be released in product waves stretching into the summer of next year.”

Black Myth: Wukong’s impact is more important than any award
Sun Wukong holds his staff in Black Myth: Wukong.

More than any other game released in 2024, Black Myth: Wukong took the world by storm. The action-adventure title from Game Science, a Chinese developer, annihilated Steam records in August, peaking at over 2.4 million concurrent players. It comfortably sits in second place among its contemporaries, according to SteamDB. Most recently, Game Science reached another milestone by winning Best Action Game and the Player’s Voice voting at The Game Awards.

While Black Myth: Wukong is an adaptation of the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West, it has an entirely different narrative hook: a continuation of the tale itself, set centuries after the adventures of Tang Sangzang, Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie, and Sha Wujing. In it, you play as the Destined One, tasked with finding the six relics left behind by the Monkey King, Sun Wukong, in an effort to revive him.

This new Alien game will tide you over until Alien: Isolation 2
Key art for Alien: Rogue Incursion

It’s hard to believe it has been over a decade since the release of Alien: Isolation. No Alien game since then has matched the intensity of its survival horror focus. Slowly creeping around a space station, only to be ambushed by a Xenomorph and engage in a cat-and-mouse chase in hopes of survival, is an exhilarating experience that no other Alien game has quite been able to achieve. Unfortunately, Sega and Creative Assembly did not immediately start work on a follow-up; it was only this year that we learned a sequel is in the works.

That Alien: Isolation sequel is still years away at this point, but thankfully, a different Alien game is here for players looking for another Xenomorph-filled first-person shooter. It’s a new VR game from Survios called Alien: Rogue Incursion, and it's your best bet for that Alien horror short of replaying the original Alien: Isolation as we wait for its sequel.
