Borderlands 2 came out way back on September 18, 2012, but it’s still fertile ground for all manner of content experimentation froom Gearbox Software. In addition to the third and final Headhunter DLC pack that’s coming up next week, fans equipped with camera-enabled smartphones also stand to get some sweet loot with help from Gearbox’s newly released LootTheWorld app.

In short, it’s a souped-up QR code reader that pairs with your Gearbox Shift account. Anytime you spot a QR code – any QR code – out in the real world, shoot it with the app and you’ll unlock some kind of weapon, grenade, shield, or class mod. You also in stamps, which you then use to send said item to your Borderlands 2 save (after you’ve signed in via Shift). There doesn’t appear to be any way in the app to see how many stamps you have, but some QR codes give you more stamps in addition to a weapon.

Gearbox’s post on the subject suggests that you’re also able to scan bar codes, but we’ve had no luck with that so far. The app detects them, but it spits out an error on every bar code we’ve tried so far (around half a dozen). Between that and the inability to view your stamp count, it appears that LootTheWorld could use an update or two. It’s a promising start though, especially as a taste of something we might see more of in future Gearbox games. You can grab the app from the iOS and Android storefronts now, or you can just follow one of the direct links provided in Gearbox’s announcement post.

Why see the Borderlands movie when you can get the games on sale?
The four playable Borderlands 3 characters (plus a dog creature) standing together shooting at psychos.

The long-gestating Borderlands movie is now out in theaters. You can go see it this weekend, or, if reviews are any indication, you might want to stay home and play some Borderlands games instead. And right now you can get the whole series at a deep discount on just about every platform.

The easiest way to build out your Borderlands collection is through Borderlands Collection: Pandora's Box, a bundle that consists of Borderlands 1, 2, and 3, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, Tales from the Borderlands, and New Tales from the Borderlands, along with each game's DLC. The collection is normally $150, but you can get it now for $37.49 on PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and Steam. It even came to Nintendo Switch this week, and is available for the same price. All deals appear to expire on August 15. You can't get this bundle on the Epic Games Store, but the platform is also holding a franchise sale.

You’re going to want a squad for Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2
A space marine stands tall in Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2.

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, an upcoming action game from Saber Interactive and Focus Entertainment, is shaping up to be one of the year’s biggest hits. The last look we had at the shooter was in 2023, where we glimpsed a short mission on Kadaku. This time, I went hands on with two Operations mode missions, as well as the Voidsong mission, where I primarily took part as a solo player.

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 is quite unlike its predecessor, which only offered a single-player campaign. This sequel allows for online campaign co-op for up to three players. Players take control of former Ultramarines Captain Titus, flanked by squadmates Chairon and Gadriel, who are controlled by the AI in case you’re unable to invite friends. With thrilling gameplay that creates a genuine “against all odds” feel, Space Marine 2 has the right ingredients for an engaging co-op shooter -- you’ll just want to make sure you have some friends to play with.
Of bots and boltguns
Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 puts players in the heavily armored boots of a titular Space Marine, a gene-enhanced superhuman soldier at the frontlines of millenia-long wars. As a selectable class in Operations mode or as Captain Titus in the campaign, you make use of a plethora of weapons in pulse-pounding third-person shooter gameplay. These armaments include Melta Guns with their fiery projectiles, rapid-firing Carbines, reliable Boltguns and Bolt Pistols, massive Power Fists, and energy-infused Power Swords.

You’ll have to wait just a little longer for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl
A Stalker from Stalker 2 looks off in the distance with a radioactive symbol behind him.

Upcoming survival game S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl has been delayed yet again, but unlike some of its other delays, it's only by around two months. Developer GSC Game World posted a video and statement on Thursday saying the game's release, which was previously set for September 5, will now be November 20. It wrote that the developers want to take the time to fix some bugs (or "anomalies," as it calls them).

The video, posted on YouTube and X (formerly Twitter), says the zone will remain "out of bounds" until that date. The player character then opens their table to see the new date. "Really?" they say. "Again?"
