Amazon’s New World MMO is delayed again, this time for a year

New World, Amazon Game Studios’ ambitious massively multiplayer online game, has been delayed for a second time until the Spring of 2021.

The game was originally scheduled for a May 2020 release, but it was delayed until August 25 with its closed beta set for July. Those dates were moved because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“When we examined the feedback we received over the last several months from our Alpha audience, we saw that players like the game, and they would like to see even more of it,” Studio Director Rich Lawrence said in a blog post. “In particular, we want to ensure that the most dedicated players have plenty of middle and endgame experiences as they venture through Aeternum.”

He said accomplishing that goal meant “added time to get things where we want them before we fully release.”

People who signed up for the beta will now get a chance to play the game in its current version for a “limited period of time” on August 25. Those players will get emails telling them what they need to do to participate.

New World is Amazon Games’ big foray into the MMO world, and it made a splash when it was revealed during The Game Awards in December of last year. It’s set in the 17th century during the Age of Exploration on an island called Aeternum, and it’s going to be huge, with the ability for up to 100 players to fight each other all at once in special battles called fortress sieges.

“We love the thematic ideas of a newly discovered world, crude technology that might advance and mature over time, and the role that faith and superstition play in establishing an enduring settlement,” said Patrick Gilmore, Studio Director, Amazon Game Studios Orange County, in an interview with Digital Trends. “And more than anything, we loved the idea of a frontier—a sort of boundary between the known and unknown, implying there would always be something new to discover.”

The game won’t have combat similar to World of Warcraft, but it will instead offer something that allows for more direct control. Veterans from World of Warcraft and Everquest, however, are on the game’s development team.

Digital Trends has reached out for more information about the delay and will update this story when we hear back.

Captain America: Brave New World trailer previews an explosive Red Hulk fight
Red Hulk roars in Captain America: Brave New World.

It's been over three years since Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) officially became the Marvel Cinematic Universe's new Captain America at the end of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. In early 2025, he's finally going to go on his first solo MCU adventure in Captain America: Brave New World. The film will test Sam's resolve by pitting him against not only Seth Voelker (Giancarlo Esposito), a.k.a. Sidewinder, and the rest of his villainous Serpent Society, but also the MCU's newly elected President of the United States, Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross (Harrison Ford).

Ever since William Hurt first appeared as Ross in 2008's The Incredible Hulk, comic book readers have been waiting to see the character transform into the Red Hulk. In Captain America: Brave New World, they're finally going to get to see that, though the character's long-awaited evolution will be portrayed by Ford, who stepped in to play Ross following Hurt's death in 2022. Notably, the first Captain America: Brave New World trailer only briefly alluded to Ford's Red Hulk transformation.

Tetris Forever includes a new game with a time-warping twist
Different Tetris boards appear in Tetris Forever.

Tetris has had too many variants to count during its lifetime, but the latest installment of the series is unlike any of them. Tetris Forever is a playable documentary from Digital Eclipse, the team behind this year's Llamasoft: The Jeff Minter Story, which includes several classic games. It's not meant to be an exhaustive collection bringing together every game in the series. Rather, it's an interactive history lesson filled with archival material, original interviews, and a selection of games that tell its story.

When it releases on November 12, players will be able to dive into obscure titles like Hatris and Super Bombliss alongside standard Tetris. There's one big twist coming in the package though: Tetris Time Warp. The new game is an original creation by Digital Eclipse that's a sort of playable extension of its documentary efforts. Ahead of its release, Digital Trends got a closer look at Tetris Forever and its wealth of historical material. Our hands-on session included a few rounds of Tetris Time Warp, a charming project that's only making a must-own package even more enticing.
Let's do the Time Warp again
If you've played The Making of Karateka or Llamasoft: The Jeff Minter Story, you should know what to expect with Tetris Forever. The project is laid out into five chapters, each one containing an interactive timeline. If you follow that from start to finish, you'll get a full history lesson on Alexey Pajitnov and how Tetris came to be. The project doesn't just tell that now familiar story, though. As I poked through the timelines, I found a lot of surprising references. One slide showcased Pokémon Tetris, an oddball spinoff made for the even-odder Pokémon Mini. Another showed McDonald's recent chicken nugget handheld, which could run Tetris.

A new Tron game is coming next year, and it’s got Light Cycles
A light cycle moves through a street in Tron: Catalyst.

Tron is getting a new video game in 2025, and it will be the first publishing project of Devolver label Big Fan Games. Disney Tron: Catalyst is an isometric action game set in The Grid with an emphasis on narrative, identity disc combat, and light cycling. Digital Trends got a close look at the project in a hands-off demo prior to its reveal, where we learned more details about the project.

Disney Tron: Catalyst is the latest project from Bithell Games, wich previously released the excellent Tron: Identity in 2023. Catalyst is a continuation of that story, but an entirely different kind of game. While Identity was a visual novel detective story, Catalyst is a more traditional action-adventure game with combat that brings Hades to mind.
