Nintendo news: New Mario game coming to 3DS, Kirby collection coming to Wii, 3DS system update

New Super Mario Bros 2 for 3DSNintendo is usually known for keeping mum on major game releases until events like E3 (June of this year), but it randomly revealed two new games on Saturday. Joining the Pikmin and Mario games Miyamoto confirmed for Wii U last week, a collection of older Kirby games will be released for Wii later this year along with New Super Mario Bros. 2, a sequel to the popular Mario revival series.

“A new Mario game and a big Kirby celebration will help make 2012 an especially great year for Nintendo fans,” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “Whether they’re playing at home on Wii or using Nintendo 3DS to have fun on the go, players can look forward to experiencing some of our biggest franchises in exciting ways.”

Kirby 20th AnniversaryKirby: Nintendo is celebrating the 20th anniversary of Kirby. This is a bit odd, since it’s been celebrating 25th anniversaries with other core franchises like The Legend of Zelda and Super Mario. Regardless, the new game will contain a “variety of previously released, fan-favorite Kirby games.” We don’t know which games will be included, but we are certainly hoping that Kirby’s Adventure and Kirby Super Star are among the picks. With the large number of strange games Kirby has appeared in throughout the years (remember the minigolf game Kirby’s Dream Course?), it’s hard to say what titles will make the final cut. Hopefully the game will be deeply discounted as well, since many Kirby games are already available on Wii through Nintendo’s Virtual Console download service.

New Super Mario Bros. 2: Nintendo’s third New Super Mario Bros. game will hit shelves on the 3DS sometime this summer. Like other “New” Mario games, it will be a 2D sidescroller with 3D elements. We don’t know what actual new elements will be in the game, but from the screenshots compiled above, we can see that Mario’s Raccoon cap will return as well as some kind of gold metal cap. Some enemies are also curiously gold. We’ll likely learn more at E3 in June.

Mario Tennis Open: It’s coming out May 20 for 3DS and allows players to use their Mii characters and choose from a large number of items. If you’ve played a Mario Tennis game before, this is nothing new.

3DS System Update: Finally, Nintendo has announced that 3DS owners will get a system update scheduled for April 25, which will add a few new features to the handheld. The update will allow players to create folders in the HOME Menu to organize things. In addition, the eShop will now offer better recommendations and the update will pave the way for another update to those who own Mario Kart 7, fixing a shortcut exploit in the game.

That’s it for now. Nintendo sure is cashing in on old-style games lately.

As the 3DS eShop closes, devs reflect on a golden age of Nintendo indies
Best Nintendo 3DS games

The 3DS eShop is no longer allowing Nintendo fans to make new game purchases, marking the end of a long era of DS-branded handhelds. Not only that, but it's also sunsetting a vibrant indie community in the process. After helping smaller developers break through with WiiWare and DSiWare, the 3DS eShop was where indies really started to flourish on Nintendo consoles. Multiple games and developers built success stories on the platform, starting series that are still recognized in the eyes of Nintendo fans and stand as some of the 3DS’ most iconic games.

Within a year of the eShop's launch, WayForward's Mighty Switch Force provided one of the system's best 3D experiences, Renegade Kid's Mutant Mudd showed the potential of a platformer where players can hop between the foreground and background, and Hörberg Productions' Gunman Clive provided a short, sweet, and cheap throwback platformer experience with lots of styles. By 2014, Yacht Club Games' Shovel Knight had cemented itself as one of the best indie games of all time on the 3DS. Titles like that gave the 3DS a reputation as a haven for smaller developers. a platform where they could break out of a niche and connect with a larger audience.

The Nintendo Switch has one of the greatest first-party lineups of any Nintendo console. In addition to several outstanding original games, a lot of awesome Wii U games like Super Mario 3D World, Pikmin 3, and Mario Kart 8 finally got all the love they deserved when they were ported to the Switch. Even some 3DS games like Miitopia have made their way to Nintendo Switch. Still, that isn't all-encompassing, so when the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U eShops are discontinued on March 27, we will lose access to some amazing first-party Nintendo games that aren't available elsewhere.
From black sheep in their respective series to new IP that tests out some novel ideas, four Wii U and four 3DS games that are still platform exclusives stuck out the most to us. If you're specifically looking for Nintendo-published games to pick up before the 3DS and Wii U eShops stop allowing the purchase of new games, consider picking up one of these titles.
Xenoblade Chronicles X

Considering the rest of the Xenoblade Chronicles series is on Nintendo Switch, it's very surprising that Xenoblade Chronicles X has not made the jump over yet. This RPG stands as the black sheep of the series, with a more gritty style and tone, mech suits, and a plot about humans who crash land on an alien planet after escaping Earth, which might be why it didn't come over before the trilogy was completed. Xenoblade Chronicles X is a great game in its own right, though, and also makes ample use of the Wii U GamePad for its detailed map and menus. As such, it's a worthwhile Wii U pickup for those who like to play games uniquely tailored to the system and enjoy seeing what the oddball entries in game franchises have to offer.

The eShops on the 3DS and Wii U will shut down on March 27, so players are splurging on great games that they want to pick up in the final days of each storefront's life span. If you can't drop any cash on games for these systems before then though, you're probably wondering what's available from them for free. For the most part, it's demos, as the 3DS and Wii U weren't really known for their free-to-play offerings. Even then, many of the available free-to-play games -- or "free-to-start" titles as Nintendo called them in that era -- won't have much use after the eShops cease game sales because most of their content is gated by microtransactions.

Some might be a little more time-consuming due to in-game timers and other microtransactions, but are still worth checking out regardless. If you're wondering what full games you can play on 3DS and Wii U for free ahead of the eShop storefronts' discontinuation on March 27, we recommend checking out the following six titles.
