This classic Rare title is finally coming to Nintendo Switch Online

Nintendo 64™ – October 2024 Game Update – Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack

Another classic Rare Nintendo 64 game is coming to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. Banjo-Tooie, the sequel to Banjo Kazooie (of course), is being added to the service on October 25, Nintendo announced on Friday.

The company announced the addition in a new trailer, which you can watch above. You won’t see anything you haven’t seen before if you’ve played the game. This appears to be a nearly straight port to to Switch Online, although it will have a new widescreen mode, so you can see more of the game on your bigger TV.

Nintendo Switch Online already has Banjo Kazooie, which came out two years prior. While the first game in the series is arguably better known, there’s a lot to like about Banjo-Tooie. It has more puzzles, better graphics, large game worlds (comparatively speaking), and multiplayer modes.

It also marked the last game that Rare would make with Nintendo before being acquired by Microsoft in 2002. Previously, Nintendo invested a lot into Rare, which led to some iconic N64 releases, including GoldenEye 007. Both GoldenEye 007 and Banjo Kazooie were added to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack in 2023 and 2022, respectively, so it was about time Banjo-Tooie got the same treatment.

Other N64 games that you can access through the Expansion Pack tier of the membership include Mario Kart 64The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of TimeMajora’s Mask, multiple Mario Party titles, and others. There are also Super NES, Game Boy, NES, Game Boy Advance, and Sega Genesis games on the service, if you’ve been on the fence of picking it up. While the base Nintendo Switch Online tier costs just $20 per year, the Expansion Pack, well, expansion costs $50 per year

After 7 years, the Nintendo Switch finally has an official Joy-Con charging stand
Purple and green Joy-Cons on the black charging stand. There's another charging stand next to it, but it's lying flat on the table with two white Joy-Cons.

You'd think Nintendo would have released a Joy-Con controller charging stand by now, but you'd be wrong. Nintendo is finally releasing one on October 17.

The company announced on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday that it's releasing an official Joy-Con Charging Stand -- more than seven years after the Switch itself debuted. We don't have any other details, nor is it available for preorder, but based on the product images, it seems to support all Joy-Cons -- even the Nintendo Entertainment System Controllers. It also appears to work vertically on a stand and horizontally if you want to lie it flat. As with the Switch itself, it has a USB-C connector on the top.

You can snag a rare discount on one of Nintendo’s best strategy games this week
A red Pikmin looks around in Pikmin 4.

Pikmin might be one of the most underrated Nintendo series because the note it tries to hit is so specific. Its charming visual style and cute alien antics need to excite casual Switch players while not turning off strategy game experts, while the actual puzzles in the game need to be challenging enough for advanced players, but solvable for players who just want to pluck little colorful dudes out of the ground and ride an alien dog. It's quite the balancing act and Pikmin 4 absolutely nails it.

If you haven't jumped into the world of Pikmin before, Pikmin 4 is one of the series' strongest entries — it captures the charm of the previous installments while rebalancing the game's sometimes frustrating control scheme and rewriting the story a bit to make it easier to follow for new players. Straight-from-Nintendo titles rarely get solid discounts, and it's not uncommon for them to remain at launch-day prices for years, so it's an absolute joy to see right now.

Nintendo is coming after Switch modders once again
A person plays Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on a Nintendo Switch in handheld mode.

Nintendo is no stranger to lawsuits these days, and it's filed two more, as reported Tuesday. One is against the owner of a company who allegedly sold modded Switches, while the other concerns the moderator of a subreddit where users could learn how to play pirated games.

According to TorrentFreak, which had copies of both complaints filed in U.S. District Court in Washington, Nintendo is suing Modded Hardware and its owner, Ryan "Homebrew Homie" Daly, for selling Mod Chips, modded Switch consoles, and a memory card that lets people play pirated games. Nintendo's lawyer wrote in the suit that this caused "substantial and irreparable" harm to the console giant. It's seeking damages for copyright infringement, along with other charges such as "trafficking in circumvention devices."
